I'm sure this is old news, but I just saw this for the first time, and was kind of blown away after seeing the realtime DOF, GLSL materials, and realtime softbodies. I hadn't realized how quickly blender progressed since I last used it. Honestly, this is light years ahead of maya in many aspects. After seeing this and using zbrush a lot recently, it is clear their openGL implementation is shameful. Granted I work mostly with mental ray, and those shaders aren't supported by my graphics card, but autodesk needs to look at the future and realize pretty quickly they are about to get upstaged in a major way by open source software.

Sure blender isn't pretty, and I don't want this to be another stupid "GUI SUCKS BAWWWWW" discussion, because that won't be a problem with 2.5 coming out. I also think the close-minded fools who use that as their last excuse for not checking out an amazing piece of free software are going to very quickly find themselves out of work because they can't adapt to new things. and not just blender. whole new paradigms.

when's zbrush 4 coming out already....

Yep it's great isn't it and it's all realtime. Loads more goodies have made it into Blender since that demo was done as well.

Indeed, I think that all of us who have encountered and used Blender over just-a-couple-of years can quite rightly say that we have had the same experience. ... i.e. ...

My professional background is in the field of software development, and I can unquestionably say that the achievements of the myriad Blender developers is truly outstanding both in terms of graphic design and software engineering. We are truly looking at a mode of product development that is astounding ... -ly successful.

Hell, if you've been not-watching Blender for even just a couple of months, you'll scarcely believe what has happened "since you've been gone."

This is "nothing but great news" for the CG industry, because it truly makes professional-grade technology available to everyone, and of course to every school, at zero cost. (It so happens that Blender is the tool that I use for what qualifies for-me as "professional work." For whatever nickel that might be worth to anyone. ;) ) So, we're going to very-soon be blessed with boat-loads of students ... and practitioners ... who are quite well-versed in "the present state of the art." Thanks to Blender, and to the countless folks who contribute to it.

Well done! We could never do it without you all.

P.S.: Software tools almost never "displace" one another. What has truly happened in this case is that Blender has by-now rightly assumed its place alongside each and every other major player in the field... as a bona-fide, unquestioned peer which has "earned its chops" just as they did. Which is truly amazing. Blender defined its niche in video and in real-time games, but within that niche it promptly implemented just-about every algorithm and feature that anyone on the planet ever dreamed of ... "with the rest to follow." We live, as they say, in very interesting times.
