View Full Version : 2009 Modeling & Texturing Demo Reel
07-27-2009, 08:42 PM
Hi, few months ago I finally managed to put some of my work together and update my reel. I hope it is showing my current modeling/texturing level.
Warrning : For people that don't like 360 turntables - yes, it contains wireframes/turntables/breakdowns - altrough, I tried to keep it as interesting as possible :D
I would love to hear your opinions.

This was sick, I like the robot at the end.
07-27-2009, 09:01 PM
Great reel! I like the quick teaser at the beginning of the reel. Its a good way to get someones attention right off the bat. (i figure you know this) but i just wanted to reiterate it heh
Did you do the animation tests of the robot? Is there more?
07-27-2009, 09:34 PM
Excellent reel !
I really admire your work
07-27-2009, 09:50 PM
Your work is amazing. The Star Wars Jedi Cruiser caught my eye as well as the knight and underwater scenes.

Love the recon and below. Awesome reel.
I want to plug this , can you post a image here so I can use it as the plug image?
07-28-2009, 01:28 AM
Wow, thank you guys I'm really happy that you liked it.
@ bboyambrose : Thanks man,
@ squall787 : Yup, spot on. Usually modeling reels are all about turntables clay renders and other "less" interesting stuff :) I wanted at least the beggining to be more energetic. Plus it shows more range of models I'm making.
Like I wrote on Reel description - the animation of the robot at the end was made by friend of mine and briliant animator - Samat Algozhin. Those shoots are from the short movie that we were working on at the beggining of the year. Few shoots are allready finished, lack of time slows down the progress though. As soon as it will be finished we will post it here :)
@ PorkpieSamurai : Thank you, Sir . I appreciate that.
@ The4thAggie : Cheers, mate. If you do hardsurface modeling some StarWars ships here and there are inevitable I guess :)
@ SheepFactory : Wow, Thank you. I posted some screens in first post. Also I send you PM with link to some small images on the imageshack. If theres anything else needed please let me know.

07-28-2009, 01:46 AM
Thats great stuff. I love how you have them presented as little dioramas, especially the knight. Also like your little diver in the deep sea one, adds a lot of drama.

I accidentally came accross your demoreel on Youtube a couple of months since and I was so impressed I bookmarked it and every so often I watch it as a source of inspiration and as what I would finally like to accomplish. "Below" is the piece I hadn't seen, and I just got to say that it as impressive as the rest of your work. Good luck with everything in your life!

I'm really happy that you guys like what I'm doing and found my work inspiring.
I found your comments extremly motivating and now I will now work harder trying to keep it up. Thank you !
How long did it took me ?
Well it is hard to say, cause most of the stuff was done in my spare time after work/weekends. (My current day job is under NDA, so I couldn't include it in the reel).
I guess it would be around 1 - 1,5 month per scene - few hours here and there, sometimes more on the weekends. Most of the time I spend working on the texturing/lighting and to get the composition right - to make it look good from all the angles. Modeling itself goes quite fast (most of the bikes/cars/spaceships from the beggining of the reel were done in 3 days each.)
What software was used ?
To create the reel I was using Lightwave3d, Modo, Zbrush, Photoshop and Fusion combo. I've choose those cause that's the software I felt most comfortable with and allowed me to get job done fast. For most of the shoots I have tried to get away with as small amount of passes as possible and do as much without post as I can. I have lost some control over the composition, but managed to keep the pipeline as simple as possible. (It was done after work, at nights, sometimes with few days breaks, so I didn't want to overcomplicate things and mess up at the end). Luckly Lightwave have quite fast render engine, so most of the stuff I managed to render out in higher resolution (some in 1920x1080) later scaled it down in comp to get sharper look.
I'm happy that you guys liked the little stories I put into those turntables. Thanks again for comments !:wavey:
07-28-2009, 10:39 PM
For all of those still wondering, THIS is how a modeling reel should look.
Excellent work on all of it. The only one that didn't match the level of quality of the rest (IMHO) was the Truck, but that is still a piece that would get you hired.
The settings are brilliantly executed. A nice touch.
Very well done.
My only real complaint is Vimeo... everytime I've watched anything there, it stutters. Perhaps an alternate link for people to choose to watch it elsewhere? QT format? DivX?
Really inspiring work Mancubus, thanks for sharing.
I like your idea of your models being dioramas - makes them seem like physical models and makes turntable camera shots much more interesting. I may have to steal your idea. :)
07-29-2009, 09:23 AM
Fantastic stuff. Some of the best model scenes I've seen in a looong time.
07-29-2009, 09:31 AM
WOW!! Incredibly inspiring work!
Setting up those little scenes must make it so much more fun to put it together.
I just love the underwater one, truly epic!
07-29-2009, 01:06 PM
Impressive stuff :)
07-29-2009, 06:44 PM

07-29-2009, 10:03 PM
 Absolutely stunning work! Nice job.
07-30-2009, 03:21 AM
Amazing work, I don't know if someone mentioned this already, but the turntables need to be slower. You have so much detail in every scene, but it's hard to appreciate because they turn so fast.
Keep up the good work.
07-30-2009, 03:28 AM
This is some gorgeous stuff. Congrats!
07-30-2009, 04:09 AM

07-30-2009, 07:57 PM
Just AWESOME.... Excellent job...
07-31-2009, 02:38 PM
That is just amazing to watch. And a bit demoralizing too... How do some of you guys get so damn good at the whole package? Modeling and texturing but also the composition of some of those scenes is just unbelievably good. The level of detail and the presentation are jaw-dropping.
amazing work :applause:
best of luck in future projects
08-02-2009, 05:20 PM

08-07-2009, 03:25 PM
Man your work is simply AMAZING!
I'm impressed by the atention you put on details and I really enjoyed your reel cos you show your personal work and that gives a clear image of your creative world.
I also liked the way you organized the content on it, first a little flash of all your projects and then one by one taking the time to show your modeling, texturing ligthing and compositing skills.
I wish you could show some of the concept work and studies you did before starting the production process in your projects.
Beautiful job man, really, congatulations!
08-07-2009, 09:57 PM

08-09-2009, 02:16 AM
Back in London.
Thank You again guys, really happy that you like my work :)
As for some project studies/concept etc. there is a WIP thread, when I was creating the GREED piece. It's on the spinquad forum :
@ Silkcats : As for the preproduction here is how the process looks like :)
I know what are my limits for presentation (turntable), and what is my goal (I want show modeling and texturing skills). I'm starting with thining about the story, composition, poses, mood. Create some quick sketch. If, I think the idea will work out I'm creating low poly verison of the key objects and working on composition and poses untill it looks good from different angles. Next I'm gathering references. Pics, photos, extra informations and ideas.
Then I'm writing down a list of the details and things I want to put in. All the ideas and smallest details, even If I won't put them at the end into composition. That allows me to plan my work, split it into small steps and work on one element at a time. That way I'm not getting overwhelmed by amount of work to be done at beggining of the project. Also creating the "to do" list, and defining milestones, allow me to keep everything tight and organized. That way even after very long working day, If I had one hour to work on my personal project I look on the list and I knew what needs to be done. Also scratching tasks form the list keeps me motivated, allow me to finish projects, even if I'm tired - I see the progress - and less and less things to do :)
So, I guess that would be my tip for personal projects - solid planing :)
Thank You again
