View Full Version : displacement terrains
NowhereMan 07-31-2003, 01:45 AM Hello everybody,
I have a question that many ppl here might know how to help me out.
I just applied some displacement map to a plane in order to create a terrain. The result its ok but i want to know if i can actualy "bake" the terrain into the geometry of the displaced plane. I mean, colapse the map to the object for displaying its displaced geometry on the viewports.
Glad to have some feedback!

Really easy actually, you mentioned collapse, all you have to do (i'm assuming here that you are using the displacment modifier) is right click on the displace modifier above the plane in the modifier stack, and select collapse.
Hope that helps

You can also use a "displace mesh" mod to view material level displacement maps in the viewport.

Yep, 3DZ is right (as usual... :) ),
The material map based displacement is not displayed in the max wievport, basically, it is calculated before rendering. (This methot of diplacement assumes that you've got a "Displacement Approx" modifier on your model, if it's not an editable poly, to work) If you've used a material based displacement, youl'll need a "Displace Mesh" world space modifier, to display it in the viewport. This way you'll get the same mesh, you would get during the render preprocess. (This way displaced procedural maps will be mapped as they were set up, so the displacement stays correct. No distortion eg. because "UVW preview")

Thanx a lot guys,
Some great feedback, both methods works perfectly!!

im not quite sure if i got the question right, but u can also use a "World/planet"(dont recall the name) Material as diffuse map and use it on the displacement map to view from far away the higher lower parts of your map.
Oh well...at least u already can do what u want to so i think theres no problem if i´m completly wrong
