View Full Version : Maya mirror rig tool WIP
Xeash 07-25-2009, 06:36 AM Hi
I wanted to show you short video of my new maya rigging tool. It's only WIP but already saved a lot of my time and nerves :D
You can watch it on my site (http://xeash.net/2009/07/25/maya-mirror-rig-tool-wip/) or directly on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktIbU_lhVLY
More information about it you can find on my site (http://xeash.net/2009/07/25/maya-mirror-rig-tool-wip/)
I want to know what are you think about it)
Big thanks.

Interesting concept there Xeash :)
I hadn't really thought about working like that before, it's very dynamic and flexible.

Cool!
The only "problem" I see is the fact that you have to select all the objects to mirror it. What you could do is use something like the listConnections command in MEL, so its only needed to select some nodes(like only the joints). With a more complex arm setup, there might be 50 nodes or more that needs to be selected.

2 Leffler:
You know it's rather difficult. Just remember how works "export selected" in maya. Anyway at this stage I preffered to do precise selection for my tool. As you saw in video I didn't select all nodes by hand, I only selected top-hierarchy nodes and then used select hierarchy mel command. Besides, precise selection can be more useful. My tool mirrors only selected nodes, so you can, for example mirror only constraints, or only shape nodes (e.g. if you you forgot something).
By the way my tool can mirror nodes but also it can recreate them. For example you have two scenes with two identical biped rigs. And one day your added to one scene a tail rig, and you need to transfer it to other scene. If you use maya import-export you will need to remade all connections and hirearchy to propely integrate it to current scene rig. With my tool you only need to selected all relevant nodes in first scene, push the button and then push another button in second scene.
Thanks for your replies, I'm really interested in your thoughts and ideas
P.S.
If you want to give a try to my tool, you can send me rig part which you want to be mirrored, I mirror it and send you back)
More about it you can find in my blog
