I've changed the background a bit and decided to put a secret agents banana-car instead of a guy in a banana suit which was my original idea. The decision was made when my friend showed me Bobby Chius entry for the Strange Behavior challenge and I wouldn't feel comfortable doing something too similar...

I've done a quick test to see if the light is going to work.

Funny idea, and great expression so far on the gorilla! The perspective is effective, and the framing of the shot works great. THe only little crit I have is the one biplane whose wing is on a tangent with the bridge tower. Good luck with the rest!

You love bananas, donīt you;)... and gorillas aswell! I can only agree with what everybody else said.
The following is no critique, but rather a reminder (advice) for your future progress:
If you manage to put the focal point of the picture on the banana-car, the piece will look very dramatic and exciting! Right now, when I look at the picture, itīs the funny expression of the gorilla, that captures my attention first, even though the car is yellow! Thatīs not a good thing, since the expression of the monkey is static and the whole picture should feel vibrant and moving! Also the gorilla shouldnīt be the focus of the piece!
If you put the driver of the banana-car in focus with your eyes... and concentrate only on him... thatīs what iīm talking about! The theme is "Secret agent" and not "Funniest gorilla- moments" donīt forget that! When you show the finished piece to someone, you donīt want them to go: "Hey, funny gorilla! Ahhaahh... heīs chasing a little banana-car! Boy, is he dumb!". You want them to say: "Funny car! -then take a second look, than laugh- itīs being chased by a gorilla! Now, thatīs clever!"... Thatīs the reaction you want... or should I say: should want to provoke... in my opinion and understanding of "Secret Agent" at least:shrug:;)
I wish you the very best, since this picture can- and Iīm sure -will be a great one!!!:applause:

Hi there! I just wanted to tell you that my girlfriend and I had a really good laugh. Your gorilla/banana piece is hilarious. Although, it not clear how this is a "secret agent" themed piece, we really enjoyed it. My G/F also suggested that maybe the banana might be partially peeled. Kind of like, the gorilla got his hand on it, started to peel it, BUT it got away!

Ahhhh! The fearless secret agent jumps in his trusty banana car and leads the giant ape away. I love it!

I've worked a bit on the background and changed the color scheme. I just wanted to add a bit of a retro feel to it. I think this image i easer to read being nearly monochromatic- the gorilla and the banana-car pop out from the background.
I'll paint the gorilla and the car at the very end. Still have to deal with some cars, people and soldiers with tanks chasing the gorilla...

walrus- thanks man! I've fixed the plane issue ;)
diissar, Zeoyn, Levan, aghill, Rupy, Srulik24, Mardukk, Renderspud- thanks for those kind words guys!!!
PeterPuppet- yeah, I'm aware of all the issues that you've mentioned... But there was just not enough time for me to develop the composition correctly. When I realized that this composition is not going to be as good as I expected it was just too late to do any major changes...
ZhugeLiang- thanks a lot!!! hopefully the idea will be clearer when I finish the piece... All the best to your girlfriend and yourself
chilombiano- I won't give up, don't worry. I just hope I'll make it on time :)

great! I love dynamic of the scene and idea. May if you could make a tip of banana car a bit raised up -effect after after jump out on the road and minimal rotate the car to the observer side. I don't know if I justified you it clearly :)
keep it up!

08-06-2009, 09:30 AM
daRoz- yeah, I get it :) I'll probably change a bit the perspective of the car, if there's enough time... I'm afraid I won't make it on time, but I'll do my best. There's still few nights to do it ;)
Thanks for advice :)

It's looking nice! You've unified the palette more, which really ties the whole piece together well. The background details are looking really together too... perhaps too much so in the case of the Purol-Pen billboard. I'm finding that way too prominent: It's close to the compositional center of the action, right between the ape and his quarry. And it's really well framed by the dark arms and face. And it's an are of really high contrast, crisp white letters on dark red, and they just keep drawing my eye away from stuff I should be looking at. Might I suggest knocking back the value contrast way back, like perhaps making the sign very faded and/or fogged out. Or replacing it with a low-contrast picture as opposed to some sharp letters?
Anyhow, good luck finishing the rest. Lots of detail work now: I expect to see that gorilla's palm totally leathery and wrinkly! Good luck!

I've detailed the background a bit more. Added some tanks, cars, street lamps, signs etc. I've also worked on the sky to make it a little more interesting.
Still have to deal with the most important elements- King Kong and the banana-car.. There's not much time, but I'll do my best :)

Having troubles with leading King Kong out of New York the military commanders decide to call their best secret agent. Deception seems to be the key to this case...

Very nice mood with attention to detail :applause:
Some remarks:
-tanks and planes are a bit too static
-I would expect to see more "panic": even the birds sit as if nothing's going on ! The man in the right window is "yawning"
I know with such deadlines you can't have it all ;) Love the ape's expression !

diissar- thanks man :) I love your entry and I wish you good luck with the final results of the contest :)
TRick- yeah, I was pretty sure from the very beginning that I'll have problems with finishing the piece the way that would satisfy me and I agree all the way with you... I wanted to do a lot of little scenes going on here and there, scenes of panic like crashing cars, people running away etc. etc. But I didn't even start to paint those thinks as I was sure I won't make it.
Next time I'll start earlier and do something cool ;)
