I have this big problem.

I have car, in Cinema4D i can have 20 copys of the car and is still fast, in XSI 19 copys, but in MAYA if i have 8 copys the speed is slow and i have problem to dolly or orbit.

For my is it very big problem, i allways have big scenes (my lasp project aircraft A-10 have over 500.000 faces!!) In Cinema4D is it little slow but i can work, but when i will have this big scenes in MAYA how can i work?

I have P4 1,8, 512RAM and GeForce3

Its very importatn to me.

in cinema4Di can have 20 copys of the car, but in MAYA only 6-7 (then is speed very slow)

you could do a few things, you could try freeing some RAM from your system or you could start using layers and putting cars that are not neccessary on a seperate layer to save processor calculations, or you could work on low poly versions or use stand in objects.

When you pan around if it takes too long to move the camera go to your camera panel and click Shading>Interactive Shading> Wireframe/Bounding Box/Points.

So when you move around it wont have to calculate the shading.

It just one of those things. Not everything is perfect.

Guess 530,880 faces at the same time is kinda too much with your current specs...

Tested your scene here in a very similar computer and I got 1- 2 fps while viewing 20 copies of your car (Maximized viewport, Smooth shaded all, Maya 5, GeForce 3, 512 RAM, Athlon 1800+). Yet, it is sort of usable...

Max is even slower.

I would suggest you work with layers or proxies.

yes i can work with layers

but the point is that i use the same body in XSI or Cinema4D i can use 20 cars.

Can you imagine scenes witch are slow now in Cinema4D (i have scene with 80 object - school class)

not trying to poke fun at Maya..but ughh... 20 copies in C4d and still fast..while 6-7 copies in Maya and crap speed...OMG..cmon Alias Wavefront...its a simple problem..screw the layers or proxy or whatever the hell you else want..main point, why is it acting soo slow with a few copies....

Don't forget to pick on Cinema4D as well. 1.5 million polygon and the program slows down to 2FPS.

Any 3D program can mess up badly, I only happen to think Maya is better than most (though when it messes up it does so thoroughly...:hmm: )

When it's so much slower eventually the geometry is not 100% okay? can happen during transfer between 3d formats and often causes extreme slowdowns.

and, BTW, GeForce 3 is not Maya qualified ;)
