View Full Version : Anime and the Principles of Animation
MLHayes 07-24-2009, 06:48 AM Does Anime follow the principles of traditional animation,or is there a different set of rules to achieve the Anime stlye,I have attempted to imitate the feel of Anime while doing 3d animation,with little success.Can someone shed some light,thanks.

I guess (and it is my own guess - it would all depend on the style of anime you want) a lot of it boils down to the timing and the pace. I believe much of that probably comes from the fact that the standard framerate in a typical anime is around 14 drawings per second (thanks in part to cost cutting) versus the more traditional 24 - 30 frames per second everywhere else in the world.
If you ask me specifically how to achieve it, I couldn't tell you as I've never mastered it myself...but perhaps one direction to go (to see it being done well in 3d) would be to watch some films like "appleseed" or "vexille" for a feel of the stylized animation.

His name is Monty Oum who has worked at Midway and is currently at Namco. He's a self-taught animator whose education in animation has been purely observational, but he's garnered a massive fan following within the anime community.
