Hello,

This is my new digital painting and I am... well... stuck!

The problem is I've been looking at this painting for too long and now I cannot make anything of it. I aim to create this rich heiress of early years sitting in her room, which is adorned with antique stuff. I have just roughly painted her image. I intend to paint her hands and also give her a sword in her hands. I plan to make her a bit daring and modern for her time... but I am confused about what background should I put....

After looking at the work I am also having thoughts about her face... can anybody point out my mistakes cos I am still learning and would love to improve.... and I would really like some suggestions for the background (or anything) cos I suck at it :arteest:

Hey there, I can give you some suggestions and tell you what I can see. I really like the face and the eyes, im drawn to it right away, keep with the face and hair, define it more though. The pose? I like the leg across the chair arm, but maybe both legs crossed over? or try a different pose? Just seems like an unlady pose? The chair I would adjust to get proportions correct a little, and background? for some reason i see like a old English fireplace or something along the lines, maybe something unique and your own design? Book cases with candles nearby you can play with the lighting and give it a warm feeling? Sorry for the long critique, I hope I helped. Post the next version of it cant wait to see it finished up :)

Oh don't be sorry... I value your suggestions (you took some time off your schedule to reply)

Thanks for the suggestions. I was planning to do something with the fireplace and the books but was really confused. About the pose... I wanted to make her a little unladylike like ;) but I'll also try something different (it never hurts to make some good changes)...

Sunday is coming up so I'll be working on the piece. Will definitely upload the next wip :)

Thank you so much :) :wavey:

I would definitely add the hands in the next WIP. The gesture and position of the hands can tell so you so much about the pose. I know they're tough which might be why you are putting them off until late. Try not to do this. Get the rough background colors in so you can nail down your palette. You dont want to be changing colors half way through your painting. Nice work on the face. Keep defining that underlying structure of the whole body, you are losing some of it in her midsection and definately the legs. her knee is bulging out too much, tone it down and remember your anatomy. Hope this helps a little and keep up the good work.

She has a great expression on her face. I think you should use her expression to help you decide on a background. Visualizing her with a sword, she looks like she belongs on a royal ship, or possibly a port, waiting for someone to return, and when they do, they're going to get it.

This is just the stage 2 of my WIP... I have tried to create a basic idea for my background. I am in trouble...

I have a certain problem with her dress... I have painted the shadows to make the dress and her mid section look real but I still find it a little awkward. Can anyone spot the wrong? I do have to make the hands but as of now I am stuck with her dress. Is the shading on her dress OK? does the background look ok?

I do agree with dan that I need to create my hands right at the beginning so the entire picture will blend together, which I will start doing once my shadows on the dress are at the right place. I have also toned down her knees.

And Myles... Thanks for the encouragement... I actually like the ship idea :)

Hi...

well here's the third stage of my painting. I have made her hands and the sword and worked on her hair. so the picture will some what look like this. Finally I have a great plan for the background and I'll upload the whole thing in the next post.

I have made changes on her dress but yet to add more detailing. If you have any suggestions it will be of great help to me :)

I don't think she'd be holding a two handed sword in the middle of the air with one hand!

Very heavy!

Also, the chair looks like it's somehow floating on two legs, can't see where the back leg is (atm it looks like it would appear to be a three legged chair).

Also, think about your shading and lighting. If there's a fire behind her, shadows would strike down towards the viewer, long and soft. Also, her face and body, basically everything facing the viewer in the chair; would be a lot darker with slight rim lighting.

Try and consider diffused light too, reflecting from the soft red floor onto her dress. It'd give her dress a slight red tint nearer to the ground and the amber from the fire would also give a slight atmosphere.
