I'm looking to set up a motion blur in maya using either maya software or mental ray. Whenever I do, my render times go through the roof and I'm still not getting the look I want. Can anyone give me some pointers on what global render settings for motion blur might work best to get a cartoon-pixar type feel? The new version of Maya has a lot of options to choose from and I'm not sure which settings need to be adjusted and which work well at default.

Also, if you have any advice on the shadow type and settings that work best with the motion blur that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks!

There's always the option of 2D motion blur in post...

If you must do it in maya and are willing to endure the render times or if you must have 3D motion blur, there's a nice amount of information in the maya help docs about motion blur.

http://download.autodesk.com/us/maya/2009help/index.html?url=Vari_Set_motion_blur.htm,topicNumber=d0e578461

The yellow box has a nice tip in it =)

Some things off the bat, that I think I recall:
-If you want nice smooth interpolation in your blur (like for arc motion), you'll want to set motion blur type to "Full"
-The number of steps is basically the number of "samples" and directly affect your render time
-Shutter settings affect amount of "blur" (like a real camera...the slower the film, the greater the blur; the faster the shutter, the less blur you will have).

Sorry if it's not much help (I'm just an animator); hopefully someone smarter and specializes in rendering might come along and piggy back off of this reply.

Best of luck!

Thanks alot for the help. I'll dig deeper into the Maya help docs as well.

I'm open to rendering it using 2D motion blur as well. Do you have any advice for the 2D motion blur as well? Would you do that in Maya or run it in an editor like FCP or a compositing program like AE? Sorry for the NOOB questions. I'm a modeler who's been asked to render out some animations and I'm not familiar with these settings. Thanks again.

Unfortunately the nicest motion blurs are the Maya Software 3D motion blur or the Full mentalray motionblur rendered...but on the other hand...

...personally, I prefer to do as much as I can to reduce render times in Maya. However, if you need to do your 2D motion blur in Maya, I think that's going to be forced to using the Maya Software renderer (someone plz correct me if I am wrong).

Most of the time, I would prefer to render in passes and fake as much motion blur as possible in post in After Effects, or whatever compositing package you are using.

Here's some resources that will help you get started on just how to set that up in After Effects...

Adobe Docs on After Effects Motion Blur (http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/8.0/help.html?content=WS3878526689cb91655866c1103906c6dea-7d5c.html)(you'll want to read closely at the 5th paragraph)
