View Full Version : Where Can I Get STP Ethernet Cable? And what about CAT6 cable?
singularity2006 07-30-2003, 09:25 PM Does anyone know where I can purchase category 5 shielded ethernet cabling (STP)? I can't seem to find any places that carry it ... all the online places I find on google don't look very reliable either.
And has anyone ever used category 6 ethernet cable? I heard it uses a 500MHz frequency, but does that provide any noticable performance gain for a 100mbit network?

CAT 5 /CAT 5e is fully rated for 100Mbit Ethernet up to 300 meters (I'm not sure on that distance, but I think I'm right :p )
CAT 6 cable is fully rated for 1000Mbit (gigabit) Ethernet. Tho there really isn't any problem running gigabit over CAT 5e, unless you are reaching close to the maximum transmission distance.
I have picked up CAT 5e cable right at my local CompUSA store ( click here for compUSA network cabling page (http://www.compusa.com/products/products.asp?id=5109&category%5Fid=71&srch%5Ftype=catg2) ). It shouldn't be too hard to find CAT 5 cable...it's pretty much the only choice IT people use for networking now.
I'm also pretty sure all CAT 5 & CAT 6 cableing in standard twisted pair (STP) .

nopers buddy. Standard cabling is unshielded .... I can't find any electronics stores here that carry STP. And so Cat6 is for gigabit? I see... Thanks for that bit of nfo.

Well, I found something here (http://www.insight.com/web/apps/nbs/index.php?K=A3L791-10-H&MFR=A3L791-10-H&LP=&HP=&C=&IS=off&x=0&y=0).
As it is, Belkin (http://www.belkin.com) seem to be the most available manufacture of thru/patch cables. Truth is, I just don't think you're going to find much under 300m length in the STP area as the vast majority of people just don't need it unless they're near a heavy source of EMI.

correct. we have users on gigabit running over cat5e with no problems. you must ensure your cabling doesn't extend past about 30 meters however, otherwise you could find your connection dropping back to 100 all of a sudden.
cat6 is gigabit and 10gigabit-to-30-meters rated. it will soon be the next defacto cabling standard. motherboards are already coming with gigabit adaptors on board, and gigabit copper switches are dropping in price.
once the PCI/X and/or PCI express standards are finalised, motherboards will have the bandwidth for 10gb, and you'll see this standard start to be adopted in servers quickly, and eventually workstations and desktops over the coming years.
i'm wishing my boss had allowed my to cable our new office up in cat6, but the price difference for 200 connections was enough to make him fall back to cat5e all over. bit of a bummer that.

thanks for the tip Elvis. Yeah, I want to switch to STP because our office is in an old section of the building (well, the whole building is old) and the EM is so bad that we go through monitors quite quickly.... this is the 4th time we've replaced monitors in like .... 3 years. The EM is pretty bad and I want to in the least, ensure our data is not corrupted over the line..... The electrical wiring is pretty egregious since the office is really cramped and the wiring is using 1950's electrical code.. real bad.

Note: Just googled cat5 rj45 stp and it came up with a load of sites.

one word... Coax...:p
Shielded is kinda hard to find and pretty expensive. And it will be a while before gigabit is defacto.
Shileded STP= http://www.cables4computer.com/products/individualItem.asp?groupcode=I2244
But you will most likely want Plenum and not PVC for building fire code reasons if your stringing alot of it. PVC is toxic if it burns.

oh yes, indeed... my networking teacher told us of horror stories of the PVC stuff..... luckily for me, I just want about 6 feet of the stuff just to run between my computers and routers, which are essentially next to each other. I'll need maybe 10 feet for my work office.... that needs the special plenum stuff though even though everything is on the ground.... a fire would be bad. -.-"
