View Full Version : SIGGRAPH 20099 - The BOXXlabs Preview
BOXXlabs 07-22-2009, 03:34 PM Hi Folks,
I've put together a quick overview of some of the things to watch for this year at SIGGRAPH.
This is based on my recent research and discussions with lots of industry folks and technology vendors. I also put recent trends over the last few years into the context of this years show and tried to connect some of the dots.
SIGGRAPH is always such an important event for our industry because so much of the new tech that gets shown has wide-ranging implications for how 3D art and motion media will get made in the near future.

And I hope to make it to SIGGRAPH 20009 :-P.
I'm thinking of getting together for a few drinks maybe Sunday night (after Registration) if the meetup is on Wednesday.
What about Tuesday. I might have a meeting then but it's not certain and I would probably make it by 9:30 anyway.

Nice Siggraph summery.
I was also in New Orleans in 2000 and it was the most memorable to me.
Beignet for breakfast and Po boys for lunch and crawfish for dinner.
On the subject of 3D/stereographic. There was a guy who brought in a passive based TV that used a lenticular screen that he brought into the Studio for a day last year. He was local so we just snuck him in the back door with a free expo pass.
I think you had to view it at a 4 to 6 foot distance for it to work perfectly and even in a radius so it looked good from the sides. The 3d looked really deep and as good as anything I have seen with glasses. I wish I had more info but I think that technology could be a real boon to the CG industry because for Lenticular to work you have to break the scene into different layers to create the depth effect. It is already a common practice in CG but much harder if your scene is not completely digital.
Seeing that TV and stuff like it is the reason I go to Siggraph religiously.

Didn't BOXXlabs give away an electric motorcycle last year in LA? For some reason I specifically remember BOXX being a sponsor of that in some way. Maybe I'm just confusing it with another company that was there.
But, I hope you're doing something like that again, if in fact that was you guys. Haha!

well it wasn't BOXXlabs, but yep that was BOXX giveaway.
Unfortunately, the guy who won it couldn't pay the gift tax on it (I think that was like $9K or something).
Oh well. Now I drive it to work.
kidding. I wish I did!

Wow! That's an expensive tax! How much was the motorcycle originally? Must have been a lot.
Will you be doing another giveaway this year? :D
