Ive been having some hard time making a D-Pad in blender, just a simple NES one, with the little arrows on the ends going inside the d-pad, and i have been having trouble making those arrows. This is what i would like to make, but smaller arrows and the hole in the middle. =]

Oh, and i was wonder how do you smooth the edges on a mesh, do i do it in edit mode or object mode, and how? =/

I'd go with a hard surface approach, check out this site for lots of hard surface tutorials, videos and pdf's. Here's a quick rough of how i would go about things.
