Let's sing a song shall we?
"Search, Search, Search
Do a Search for 'Graphic Cards'
Search, Search Search
Do a Search for 'Video Cards'
Search, Search, Search
Everybody's searching now..."
Singing can be fun and educational.;)

Click here (http://www.alias.com/eng/support/maya/qualified_hardware/index.jhtml) to read the Alias Maya 5 hardware compatibility chart. I'll save you a little time though: nVidia Quaddro 4 and FX series have no problems in maya. ATI Fire GL does have issues. Check the link for details.

the radeon family of video cards are aimed at gamers. their design philosophy is not intended for professional 3d applications, and as such you may find yourself having a few problems with them in your applications.
as others have mentioned, if professional 3d work is your thing, definitely head towards the nvidia quadro4 or quadroFX family of 3d cards. these are rock-solid cards with good driver and software support.
