Try out the ramp shader. with the facing angle set as the colour imput.
If that doesn't give you the control you want, then connect the facing ratio of a sampler info node (a utility) with the V co-ordinates of a ramp mapped to colour/transparency/or whatever.
Adding some glow (turn off auto-exposure if you're animating!) effects can help you get softer edges, preserve luminance, etc, if you are going for a specific look.
This is all vauge as hell, but it'll put you in the ballpark.
