View Full Version : demo reel crit
marceylee 07-20-2009, 09:57 PM Hi :)
I'm constantly looking for feedback for my demo reel, and I was wondering if anyone can look through my current demo reel or anything else in my website and offer some feedback. I accept any and all feedback...bloodier the better. I specifically am looking for design crits and poly optimization :) I'm also open to other comments too. Thank you in advance for your time.

The biggest problem with your side is that it is not conveyed to me what kind of work you want to do. You have a very varied portfolio, and while its good to have background in all these different areas, you want the portfolio to aim directly at the job you are looking for. I would suggest making the links bigger, and towards the top for the work that is specific to your niche, or even make a separate "other work" page that houses all this stuff.
I like that your website starts right at your reel, and the reel is quite nice, but I think the naked woman and the girl (second model) should be the first to be replaced. The first model is awesome, and a great start to the reel.
You mentioned that you want critique for your poly optimization, but your wireframes are difficult to see. I suggest making the wires bigger/darker or something so we can actually give you good feedback on them.
The image navigation on your website is slightly annoying to me. The only reason for this is there is no buttons to go to next/previous picture. I know you can select them at the bottom, but its just a feature I would expect when browsing through a lot of images. This leads to my next concern:
You have a lot of images in your site. Your portfolio should contain only your very best work. This is especially noticeable with your 2d character stuff. There are a lot of doodles in there that simply do not belong. I'd rather see 3 really awesome pieces of work instead of 20+ half-assed drawings.
I don't like the fact that you have random videos amongst your images in the 3d environment art section. Find a way to make it known that they are videos instead of them being randomly mixed in with images. However I really like how they stream in the browser, but the second video was quite choppy (video size may be too large, or my internet might have dipped a little bit, not sure.)
Overall, I think you have a great start. Just be mindful of the suggestions I have made! I hope this crit is bloody enough for ya :).

This is great feedback. Thank you so much. It's very detailed. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner.

i didn't look around the site much just the first page, it appears to me you want to be a character artist, with that in mind any 2D concepts for those characters prior to the zbrush concept would be good to flash up there in my humble opinion, it would complement your work later on. Your work is varied though, with that said I liked the composition of your demo reel video the way the first model (the camera movements is what i'm talking about) moved around was sleek and I may attempt something like that later also.

In addition to what Gephoria said, if your concept art is not really, really good, I would suggest AGAINST putting it with your work.
Unless its a smaller studio, most concept work is done by concept artists, so if you are shooting for studios that would have them, there is no need to show the stuff, because your portfolio is only as good as your weakest link, and if you aren't good at concept art, don't put crap quality work there, take it off and focus on the good stuff. Your portfolio is there to sell you.

If you do want to focus on characters, I would not have that first piece in the beginning. It is not human or humanoid and anatomical understanding is the big thing for character art. Your figure sketches are impressive and I would work on translating that quality into a 3D human model. You have some good stuff. Good luck!

You guys are absolutely right. Some of the work I have online in my opinion are not the best, but I wanted to get feedback from people. I think good art should be agreed by more than 1 person. I don't know how many people whom I've met who's art sucked and they thought it was the best thing since mona lisa. I put everything I have up and tried to get some feedback like I'm getting here. I think the next step that I will do is maybe ask some people which works specifically they didn't like. Thank you for crits, everyone. I loved all your comments even the bloody ones :) Gaboon, you're absolutely right. I really want to create a good female, and I'm working on bettering my female. I wanted to show that I can do poly hair, but man it's painful, and it doesn't look as good as maya hair or (sniff sniff shave/haircut....which I don't have the money for...and yesh I tried the other method as welll.....virus city lollolll)
Thank you all so much. This has been invaluable for me. (Back to my virtual Maya drawing board) I welcome more comments.
