I'm using a tail based chain rig for something and every time i open up the scene the tail is in a different state and position.

Is the tail chain unreliable?

(It's not unlike a woman!:) sorry, just had to.)
It's spring based, so it is simulated. If you link it to your rig it will animated automatically with it. So it is a secondary motion rig.
If you want to animated your tail manually it's maybe better to use Create control spline or make your on rig for it.
It's all in the XSI guide.

u can always set an initial pose for it or cache ur spring animation.
if u want to make changes, just override the cache.
that way, u wont get that random position behaviour

actually you can reset it, or "Clear it"

just animate the Mute on the first frame so it always start that way and then animate it unchecked. for the second frame.

you can also click on "Reset simulation" to go to the original state.

the tail will do several nulls. the first one will be a box where it contains some custom parameters, where is the "Tail Control" the rest are just balls that have a delay kinda motion to it.
