sorry I`m really new to maya and I`ve got the hang of modeling,

but now I`m having an issue with textures.

I have a giant land scape with mountains and there`s a dirt road twisting through the mountains.

I want to be able to select all the faces that the road is occpuying, and apply a dirt texture to them,

then take all of the remaining non road faces, and apply a mountain texture to them.

what I could do is uv the entire mountain face, and paint the road and the mountain on one texture sheet, but for my learnings sake, I want to know if this is possible.

Please help:blush: tank u

you can assign different materials on separate polygons and also uv map those areas indepently.

just select the faces you want to apply the material to, perform any sort of projection and hit 'assign material to selected' in the hypershade after all.

just my 2 cents of basic texturing knowledge here!

thanks, that helped alot- I didn`t realixe it would be so simple:applause:

glad, this was helpful! :)

btw, it's even possible to assign materials to single polygons without UV mapping those.

i remember some painful 'patchwork-style' painting of separate tiles (to get one textured mesh!) from my first experiences with maya.

that time i wasn't even aware of UVs at all...:wip:

when you create multiple projections on a single poly mesh tick create new uv set at the bottom. Now you can assign seperate shaders on each projection/Uv set using the uv relationship editor .

ok, so I got all that, but what I`m having issues with now, is transfering some uv`s that I`ve already set up on my original set, to a newer set.

I select all the UVs that I want to transfer from one set to other and go: UV_texture_editor>polygons>Copy UVs

then I go to my empty set and go:

UV_texture_editor>polygons>Paste UVs

but nothing happens,

I could just re-set up all the uv`s on the empty layer, but I really would just rather copy paste them,

is there a way to do this?, or is this not possible...

OK, first of all, the Copy UV, and paste UV commands work on a one at a time basis. I.E. copy ONE poly face, and paste to ONE poly face.

It's really next to useless.

If you are working a lot with Polygons, it may be worth downloading the bonus games plugins from alias. They come with a whole slew of amazing UV editing tools.

What you can do is make a copy of your current uv set to a new empty UV set then remove the unwanted parts.
you just need to select your current uv set , then in your texture editor menu go to copy current uv set option box where you specify the uv set you want it copied to ( the new empty one), then resize or whatever..
As for the copy/paste tools you would use them in a situation like say you have laid out uvs for a half head,...you could select the faces > copy UV >select the faces on the other half > paste UV.

hope this helps abit

yeah ok I had the idea of copying a set, but I couldn`t figure out how to get rid of the unwanted UVs without deleting all of them. I just figured it was impossible, but now that I hear its possible, how is it done?
