Gimp 1.3.17 (Developer version) was released not about a week ago - This will probably be the last version to have new features before 2.0 is released - 2.0 was supposed to have 16 bit support courtesy of a GEGL back-end but this will wait for a future release...
Features that have made it into the 2.0 release are -
*dockable dialogs... Gimp is still a multi window affair but things are a lot more sane with this release...
*Cursors now show brush size on the canvas...
*Menu's enabled in each image window by default.
*Rudimentry CMYK support
*Improvements to most tools.
Anyways - for those very brave souls source is avaible from
http://www.gimp.org
You might also be able to find precompiled binaries for windows or your fav Distro...
