View Full Version : Speakers for office
dvornik 07-30-2003, 04:34 AM I know it's not exactly related to CG, but anyway...
At home I connect my pc directly to my stereo. Nothing fancy, just a y-cable to a receiver.
Now I want to buy some speakers for my office. The music I listen to is kind of bass-heavy, like hip-hop and drum-n-bass. Any suggestions for an unexpensive speaker setup (less than $150)?
[edit] It's some piece of shit sound card that I may upgrade if they let me.

Bose makes some incredible headphones. I use a pair of high end Sony headphones that I like a lot.
Unless you have a nice closed office, with soundproofing, I don't think you can enjoy bass heavy music and not disturb somebody.

I can. We disturb each other over there. That's one of the reasons i need some bass. :) To overpower their house and r'n'b and all of the ethnic stuff.

go to Best Buy or Circut City and listen to the speakers for yourself, because what sounds "good" to one may not sound good to another.
I have Altec Lansing and they sound good to me, Creative has some that sound good too. (all 5.1 surround) These all can be had for under $150.00

Sounds (pardon the pun) like an annoying environment to be in.;)

Thanks. Extremetech happens to have a speaker buying guide. Thanks, lowdown.

It's pretty cool for an office actually. The job is boring (sales) but the atmosphere and the people are allright.
I decided to get Altec Lansing 621 2.1. Two speakers and a subwoofer (4 or 5 would be too much for an office), 200W peak. Should be good, I've seen them in a store. Recommended by Extremetech as sub-$100 2.1 speakers. Thanks again.

And that was a good choice. Everyone can feel the bass through the floor now, even at low volume :). Actually the bass level is adjustable and the speakers sound great at low volume. There's no headphones jack, but there are 2 inputs. Overall these are very nice 2.1 speakers, no-nonsense and good quality. They are rather large though.

you get those from AL's site or you find them cheaper somewhere else? I'm also looking:)

z560's are fantastic for the price.
Combined with some HD580 Sennheiser headphones...its great whether you want to rock out, or tone out.

I work in downtown Manhattan so I pricematched them at JandR - they have an online form for that. They wouldn't go as low as $87 (lowest on cnet shopping and pricegrabber i think), but they agreed to $110 plus tax. I wanted the speakers right now so i agreed and just picked them up - i work a couple of blocks from there. The lowest online price would be around $110 total.
It's not surround - just 2 speakers and a powerfull subwoofer. But very solid overall. The bass controller is on the back of the subwoofer unfortunately, I wish it was on the remote. And like i said no headphones jack - which I don't really need.
[edit] I was seriously considering z560 but there's no place to put the rear speakers behind me and it would create a mess of wires on the floor.

yeah, two speakers are all I'd need. i have a nice 550watt surround system here, but at school I'll probably put that and my TV in the living room, and then I'd be without computer speakers;)

wish they didn't insist on putting their spec sheets in PDF format...those things were taking forever to download last night, otherwise I might've known that...they are good-looking though;)
