Hi y'all,

I built this very abstract model and rendered it out using an HDR image. I was wondering what everyone thought of the realism of it, as well as any other thoughts you might have about the render.

I enjoy hearing any and all comments about my work.

very nice, very metal. :) No crits from me since it's an abstract. How long did the render take?

well,

for my taste the camera is just too close to the object to be able to tell anything about the object itself. mostly all you see is a black scratched surface with reflection. if there is more of the model to see, i suggest you show it by moving the camera further back.

the parts we DO see of the model do look nice in terms of specularity and reflection. dont overdo the DOF though.

otherwise try somehow to get rid of the green background in the upper right corner as well. cause its a bit irritating.

i really would like to see more pics of this, just from a different angle though

That's really cool. No idea what it is, but it's cool :) Very realistic. The metal, uh socket? ..thing really sells it.

I don't mind the green so much, gives it an 'old fashioned' sort of feel, makes me think of those big black rotary phones or something.

Taoizm~Thanks for the positive feedback. Rendering time for that first image was about five minutes. Not too bad since I think I had it on low AA and no DOF (faked it in Photoshop).

Stimpy~Nice to have some constructive criticism too. I'm not sure what you find irritating about the green but I'd have to agree with hypercube, I have this obsession with green and I'm not sure why. I know that purple means you're sexually frustrated but what does green mean...anybody?

hypercube~I have no idea what it is either, it started as a cube though. I like the rotary phone comparison, that's all I see when I look at it now.

Here are some different renders and some other camera angles (just for you Stimpy)

heh.

i really like the one where you put a couple of those objects on a plane. looks neat. and i like those bottom ones (a vase ??? :D )too.

re: color green. i wasnt objecting against the color itself, i myself have one of those old old phones that is the exact same color. i just meant, that if you are going for realism, however abstract the object might be, a plane in just one single color, whatever color that might be (except for white and black maybe), can give away that it is NOT real. its just that you are wondering where all those reflections come from, if the environment is just green. just for a laugh you could try using a blurred version of the reflmap you were using, or some other blurred pic in the background.

hehe.. but i should really stop now. getting FAR too anal here.

nice stuff.. :D

Stimpy~It does kinda look like a vase, but that was not my intention. You're right about the environment in that you don't know where those reflections are coming from. I'll try a blurry image in the background like you were saying.

Not anal, just some useful information...thanks again.

Very nice indeed ... I been working with HDRi environment too lately and damn, they take a loooong time to render. I am still renderring my 1280x960 firewire cable after 15 hours ... holy smoke!

interesting indeed, man 15 HOURS!! aGG!

I like the purple render, top of the list on your second post, but they all look nice, do these images take as long to render as Toeng's are? probably less poly so no..... right??!

Toeng.com~Thanks a lot. It's wierd because I have been playing around with HDR for some time with the same results as you. Painfull renders that took hours and hours, but this time it was really quick. I'm really not sure what I did differently but the first render I posted took about 5 minutes. Probably twice that for a desktop version (http://members.shaw.ca/jallies/4fun/HDR1_1024x768.jpg) . Low poly count and low AA has a lot to do with it.

Adam Klein~It didn't take 15 hours that's for sure. Thanks for the feedback.

I worked on this project over the weekend and then late Sunday night I couldn't even open the scene file without it crashing my computer. I'm going to try and post some more renders if I can just get the file working again. Has anything like this ever happend to anybody else? How do I get the file to work? Or should I just start over?

I had the same problem a while back, did you move/rename any of your files or layers? That was the problem for me, it crashed when 1 layer was empty but still in the scene. What I did was just put something in the layer, start up layout again and clear that layer in layout. (really weird too since sometimes I just get a normal "no visible layers found" error).

Hope this helps...
