here's my sketches, nothing too crazy different and I don't really like the hydraulic arm thing, probly go with a crescent shaped swing arm towards the front. Gonna try and get it modeled and rigged quick and get to animating.

thanks darknon, i'll do my best to keep up. Hey what package do you use for all your particles in sittingduck? love it!
07-20-2009, 09:19 PM
Thanks. It's 3dMax, afterburn, fumefx. Awesome plugins.
07-20-2009, 09:25 PM
i was hoping it was maya so i could start bugging you for help with my lame particles! :) great job on your movie, it's amazing.
07-20-2009, 09:32 PM
Thanks again. there'll be updates pretty soon :)
I'm no expert in maya, but I do belive that it has some fluid particle thing, that Maya people say is just as good as fumefx and afterburn, so just dig in, I guess :)

This challenge is so cool I was able to bring my buddy Victor on board to help me out with modeling. I'm going to give the rigging a shot but he's got a coworker that has offered to help out if i can't handle the rig. He really brought the model to life from my lame sketch :) I'm on to the rigging and environment while Vic finishes up the model detail.

Man, that thing just makes you think "Vrroom, vrroom." That should look great in motion.
Cheers and God bless.

This is Rayray's friend Vic. Just wanted to update where the model is at. Still not complete, adding some other accessories that we need to complete it. Anyway, let us know what you all think.

vic tossed some colors on before he headed to siggraph and finished up a motor assembly (assembly not in this render).
also here's the first shot's rough track (buildings are from a free model set off turbosquid)

Vic's done with model so I took my shot at rigging. Had fun, it's not perfect but I think it will work for what we need it to do.

That looks really cool that track, and also the vehicle and rigging :)
08-02-2009, 01:44 PM
nice rig. Are the wheels rigged to rotate automatically or do you have to manually key them?
08-02-2009, 02:37 PM
wow sweet looking rig. looking forward to seeing this in action.
08-02-2009, 07:00 PM
thanks guys. Wheels are manual keys right now - i did a tutorial a while back on using a multiplier node or something to have a constant rotation multiplied by an attribute so you could just use a 0 to 1 slider to control them. I've never learned how to do the auto rotate based on translate - any tips or tuts you can point me to? would be cool.

nice preview.. I really like the design of the vehicles, and the track looks good too. I think you have a pretty unique look with those dual wheels and snake like cockpits.. I wanna see a render :)
08-06-2009, 04:20 PM
thanks! gonna cut out the first part of shot 2 where it's just kind of dancing left and right for no reason, also will clip off half second or so of first shot. Gonna get 3rd racer in second shot as well. Trying to talk my buddy over at Rhythm and Hues to get on lighting and texturing so i can focus on booster blasts, dust, smoke, and the crash coming in shot 3! :)
08-06-2009, 04:21 PM
Uhh.. Crash... You said the magic word :)
