View Full Version : Model: Robot-Skull Crusher
BlackGas 07-29-2003, 11:25 PM Hi
Started on this about a week ago on and off. At the moment it is based pretty closely in the Skull Crusher from the Rifts (RPG) universe, although I intend on personalising him a little. Other then a few small guns this is the first real thing I have attempted to model in Max, I am old Imagine user (I wonder how many of you have heard of it? :))
Anyway very rough as I said I am new to this and it is polys at the moment, haven't yet played with Nurbs etc and I am quite happy with polys at the moment.
He is missing his hands and feet but suggestions would be appreciated. Working on the teeth at the moment which is why you will be able to see a few missing polys.

Have to admit I was a little nervous about posting here as after browsing through the forums the general quality level is outstanding. I can browse these forums for hours, nearly got me into trouble a few times already at work. :)

Well decided to start again with the Robot, the original wasn't quite right anyway.
Here is what I have so far.

Torso is pretty much complete now, May have few more details added but the majority of fine detail will be added with maps, assuming I learn how to do it, only ever textured two objects and that was years ago in a now dead application called Imagine.
The eyes are still a little bit of mess and I may need to clean up a little around the back of the shoulder as well.

Still missing, feet, arms and armour plating around his waist. Also got to add a hell of a lot more detail to him.
The weight looks very wrong at the moment as he doesn't have his arms but I just liked how it was coming along. Should have a new shot within a day or so.

Looking just noticed scale of torso is wrong, it is going to be increased by about 25%, supposed to look a bit more top heavy.

it looks like a good design, are you making this for a game is it looks like its on quite a tight poly budget?
jus lookin, it looks like the shoulders come down to far, the guard bits, i dont think the mech would be able hold its arm strait out. bad thing. shouldnt be too hard to change, but if its the way the orig is then leave it like that.
keep goin, looks allright to me.

Yeah I changed the shoulders a bit from the reference, as a first attack the robot generally charges at the target smahsing into it, I wanted to create more powerful shoulders.
Legs do look a bit naff at the moment, not quite sure what to do with them yet, going to get some rough arms and feet in first and then add detail as required. Only really happy with the torso and gun at the moment.
Not intentially low poly but my mate is going to want to animate/mess around with it so he is rather happy with the poly count at the moment. I am also going to use it as a texturing project as I have never textured anything in max before, didn't want to go too overboard.
In the future, I dream of starting a Rifts UT2K3 mod, a newer lighter version of this would be in the mod. Imagine a 30 foot robot like this storming towards you.
Naff, feet, arms, and legs in place as scale guide for me.

Redone the legs and started on the actaul arms, not a lot of progress.
Going to leave it a while and then rebuild the legs and arms as I am not happy with either of them. Don't want to get annoyed with it so going to start something else and come back to it in a couple of weeks.
Posting the above here will make sure I do so it doesn't become yet another of my unfinished projects.
Render has gone abit awol on the legs, not sure why, just using a brazil skylight.

I like the model, would be cool to see a wire frame. I think you've lit the scene well. It reminds me of something from Warhammer, is that the rifts thing you mentioned?
for a first model i think you've done great.
