watchin' it right now. nice dramatic pause looking for that button! ;)

one thing that's really annoying though: the compression of the vid is so high that inactive bones are pretty much invisible!

Meni's new short was awesome. But most of the other animations shown in the reel breaks are also very cool. I'd like to see some of this stuff on DVD some day...

LOL! That was a FUN time...
I was busy demoing Lightwave in the Boxx booth on a VERY fast Opteron based system. I was tapped on the shoulder and informed that I was supposed to do a demo on the main stage.
I had 5 minutes to "familiarize" myself with someone elses menu setup. To my surprise, 2 or 3 of the Ortho tools were not in the toolbar when I went to use them (this is about the time you have to switch to hand puppets :) )
Tomorrow I get time to make sure everything is there that needs to be there. LW8 has some INCREDIBLE new stuff though. Im pretty overwhelmed at all the new stuff.

Larry did the same demonstration at the training before the party and didn't have any trouble like he did today. He was just put on the spot, that's all. Larry, you mentioned that a lot of the ortho tools were going to be combined to make the workflow a bit faster, have they implemented that yet?

Shade01

I kinda figured it was something like that. We know you know what you're doing. It was funny though :p

Did you introduce yourself? :)
I was fried by the end of the party. I did some free LW classes all day Sat at the Art Institute and then the monday classes. Im still hammered. :P
They are being implemented but not in time for Siggraph. The basic tools you saw are only the beginning. Theres still other things in the works too. :)

I've said some mean, callous, stupid things in the past (and the present and probably the future) and so I rather keep my anonymity for now. :D But I'm a nice guy in reality, it's just forums sometimes bring out the worst in people.

Hey Remi, I read your thread about the Lee and Larry tour disaster before the thread disappeared. What happened, did you get a response from them? How many other people were there other then you that didn't know it was cancelled? I hate when ugly things get swept under the rug, hopefully CGtalk would be a better place to talk about it then at the Newtek forums.

The thread got deleted on both forums...and Larry told me he didn't know it got cancelled...as to how many people were there...I don't know...but the clerk at the front desk of the hotel said there were some....Larry said he would send the CD's to us but that's not really fixing the situation...money to get up there and money while we were there and money to get back.....i'm not sure how much the CD's are but we spent close to 300 bucks for nothing....not only that...it made me look bad to all my coworkers whom I talked into going...nuff said...I don't really want to talk about it anymore....:(

Why the heck did you want to go to the seminar anyway? You're already a damn fine artist as it stands! YOU should be the one teaching seminars! :D :buttrock:

Larry,

SInce yoiu had a chance to play in LW 8 and now that it has been shown at siggraph can you tell us what some of your favorite new tools are? (ones you're allowed to talk about that is)

BTW is anyone going to show that new Animated UV feature? If not do you know if you can make enomorph like UV changes so I could draw eyebrows on an image and by moving the UV pts make the brows frown and move?

it's annoying when they dangle a new feature at us and not tell us what it actually does...

thanks and great demo,

Jason

To be honest Im still VERY overwhelmed with all the new tools.
I want everyone to also understand a couple of things:
1. Newtek is showing off a PRELIMINARY version of LW8. What has been demonstrated at Siggraph is in no way a final version. Its only the BEGINNING. There is more to come. What Ive seen has blown me away and Ive never been more excited about Lightwave then I am now.
2.There also seems to be some misconception that all the new features are just character related tools. I dont agree. The tools that have been shown are probably what are CURRENTLY the most exciting or interesting but there is MUCH MORE on the way.
What has been shown are probably those things which were probably the most wanting in Layout. Anyways...
Firstly, no more having to rely on skelegons to set up bones.
It can now all be done in layout. You can draw, edit, drag, split, fuse, mirror, copy, etc etc bones directly in layout. Those of you who are familiar with the Ortho tools know what I mean. The guys at Irrational Number are now part of the dev team. What ortho does now is only the beginning of what it will be by the time LW ships. Constructing skelegons is now fast and easy with these tools.
Next you have a new IK system. You turn on IK for an object by simply clicking on it and nodes appear on each joint. NOTE: This can be a segmented character or a character with bones...it doesnt matter. I also say 'Character' but it can be a mechanical setup as well. It literally takes just the click of a mouse to apply it and its automatically applied and available at every joint. Each joint has its own local menu as well as a global menu for making changes. You can switch between IK and FK on the fly and specify how long each is on or off. You can lock pieces down and specify for how long. Whats scarey is that you expect some massive set of menus and options ot pop up ala the old motion designer. Its ridiculously easy now to set up. Other options you have is to apply DYNAMICS such as wind, gravity, collision etc to joints. JUST this is going to effect so many things in a very dramatic way.
Lets say you wanted to rig that octopus they were demoing. You can, in literally a couple of minutes, draw single bones for each tentacle then use bonebreaker to split each into 20 bones and then simply click to apply dynamics or start animating tentacles using instant IK/FK.
I could go on about the rest of the stuff Ive seen and theres a lot I still dont know...as I said, its all very overwhelming. Chucks previous posts about 'enhancements' win the understatement of the year award. :)
To be honest, I think everyone is pretty overwhelmed and trying to get a handle on all the CURRENT new stuff. :P

That all sounds very cool Larry.
I've been watching the stream the last 2 days and I have been very impressed so far with the bones and dynamics. So I wonder what else will be added before it ships.

Cheers,
JS

Well, this is just the beginning. What we have seen at Siggraph is not the final 8.0 by any stretch. Many things are in the works, Newtek has a dev team and theyre very smart people. What we will see in 8.0 is already overwhelming as I said and what doesnt make it in by 8.0 will be seen in incremental updates. This applies to Layout AND Modeler. :)

Hi Larry,

the only thing I really wanna know is how fast is the Lightwave bones playback speed ? Is it getting close to messiah or MB ? Looking great so far thatís the only thing (for now) in wanna know !!!

I really don't envy Larry or any of the other demonstrators at shows like this. To talk, think about the crowd and work on a new work in progress program is bad enough, but when somebodies been playing with the interface setup as well makes it a real nightmare.

I get this a lot at work, where I'm often asked to give Autocad support. I sit down at somebody elses machine with a customised interface and it's like "Woha !! Where's the move (save, rotate, scale, etc) button to ????" Nothing inspires more confidence than an "expert" who can't find the move button :wip: :D
Most times I have to resort to typing everything on the command line.

Envelopes, envelopes, is it true that everything will have an envelope. Must know, must go, must find another thread to post in.
