I've had this question and was just reminded can you render the colors that come when you use vertex paint when i do it it does nothing. Not that vertex paint is very good it sucks for low poly models it just make blobs

Please read the sticky containing some general rules related to
posting in this sub-forum of CGTalk.

you can find the thread HERE (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57917).

I have edited your thread title now so people searching for
answers in certain fields [modeling, lighting, texturing] can find
those threads more easily.

Put a vertex color map into the diffuse slot of your material.

Vertex paint can be useful in many cases, and you can rely on the meshsmooth behavior with a painted vertex: A meshsmooth iteration vill smooth the paionted vertex info too. So for quick masking, or terrain creation vertex paint is quite useful. No need to go down to texturing, or some 3rd party plugin. It's right there.

So, IMO veretx paint can be a good time saver. And also an option, if you plan to use procedurals only.

and when i add diffuse map "vertex color"... and render > it does nothing. i change map channel to 1 and then render > it does that:
