i new to xsi and used to working with maya. i was wondering how i can make a setup in which i can use a hdri to light a object while seing the backgroundimage it should be integrated to and having lights cast shadows on a plane and only the shadow is visible thus making the illusion of the object sitting in the image.
in maya i would load the hdri into the IBL make a plane assign a use backgroundshader/mip_matteshadow and put the image into the imageplane of the camera.
how would i do that in xsi. i found the environmentshader to assign the hdri. i can't find the mip_matteshadow and i can't find a way of showing a image in the camerabackground. i am not looking for a way to do it in compositing. i want it that way, because it makes it easier to light the object appropriately.

Ok here goes! apply a Lambert material to the Grid. Open up rendertree and go to nodes,Illumination, more, mental images and select the mip_Matte_shadow. Connect this into the surface port of the material node.

For the background image. Hit the 3 key to get to Render. Pass, edit, edit current pass,output,add,2D_background_pic,inspect and apply your image.

also.

for good hdri setup check out http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=24&t=674920
you can also make a Image based lighting pass.
hope this help, this is the first time I have done this:)
