hi I have a question about a displacement map and I hope someone can understand what I mean

according to Maya:
Black = zero displacement
white is maximum displacement
or at-least my test renders say so

well I think it is kinda weird since i can now only make bumps and no dents.
I think it suppose to be:
black = maximum negative displacement (dent)
grey = zero displacement
white = maximum positive displacement (bump)

am I not getting something or is it just impossible to make a dent and a bump whit displacement file?

There is a way.
You are assuming correctly...
black = maximum negative displacement (dent)
grey = zero displacement
white = maximum positive displacement (bump)

To get this to work, enter half of the value you put in "Alpha Gain" into "Alpha Offset" and be sure to insert a negative in front.
Example: If your Alpha Gain is 1.000, then your Alpha Offset would be -0.500. If it's 2.000 then it would be -1.000 in Alpha Offset.

If you don't enter that value in the Alpha Offset then you won't get any "dents"... only "bumps".

Hope this helps.
