View Full Version : 3dsmax 6 : Discreet for dinner
twilight 07-29-2003, 06:30 PM I've just heard of 3dsmax6, so i went straight to discreet.com to find out that amazing written from scratch piece of code (still looking though...). But then i was amazed at a completely new feature that will change the way we work in 3D: the MEATBALL !!!!
I've always wanted a feature like that! Can you imagine? A 3D program that allows you to do meatballs???!!!

I couldn't wait to know more about it! So i went into the "more info" section and i couldn't believe my eyes...

No metaballs???? Oh, you meant metaballs???? Damn!!!
I guess we won't have spaghetti with 3dsmax7!
:applause:
Way to go discreet!

It coincides with Digimation's newly announced max 6 particle plug-in "Spaghetti" and fluid dynamic plug-in "Tomato Sauce" ;)
Is this a joke? metaballs are pretty old stuff...

The mentioned shell modifier looks pretty sweet.

*sigh*...the joke is: "Meatballs" typo instead of "Metaballs".
(But it's no joke about the Digimation PIs)

if you want metaballs check out Houdini.....
I don't know how they will be implemented in max, but they are very cool anyway :)

I've used the Shell modifier plugin since Max 3. It's not really new.

I might be totally wrong but according to the pdf you can download at discreet it doesn't seems to be the "modeling" metaballs" but more the ones used to create the mesh in a fluid engine like Real Flow whice would be cool too anyway :)

is there a shell modifier plugin since max3? is that plugin respect vertex normals?
what i know that max5 and older can't save normals. correct?
is vertex normals and polygon normals the same thing?

It was called "Solidify" and has been around since at least the Max 3 days. It was written by Andrei Zmievski. Here's his description of Solidify:
"Solidify is a modifer plugin that takes your surfaces and makes them solid. An easier way to describe it would be to say that it does extrusion along vertex normals. No more wrestling with extrusion or double sided materials, Solidify makes it a snap to give your surfaces thickness, with as many segments as you need. "
Maybe I'm wrong (not the first time!), but it sounds to me like the Shell modifier is very similar to Solidify.

NEW FEATURES??? MAX 6???? Must be a joke, that "new features" are only for a simply max 5.5 version...
with that kind of progress in 2004 we will have the Max 9.3 version... :thumbsdow :thumbsdow :thumbsdow

I guess discreet is going to continue to ignore the nurbs implementation :annoyed: Shell modifier does sound just like solidify, I use solidify for cars, great time saver!
