View Full Version : Wacom Intuos3 Expresskeys
scrollocked 07-15-2009, 07:04 AM I'm curious. What functions do you guys have setup on your tablets? I'm having trouble trying to decide on what is most comfortable and useful. Maybe hearing about other configurations will give me some good ideas.
thanks!

Things I've used and liked:
undo
clear all
on the pen switch:
pan
eyedropper
These days I might add one to call up Gaussian blur, unsharp.

i really don't like the express keys too much, I have a habit of pushing them with my elbow and wrist.
I do have one of them set to toggle between my two monitors, great for when I want to peruse ref folders on my top screen and then drop back to my work screen.
Also, the touchstrips- good tip is to set them to only be activated by the stylus- saves the headache of your sleeve suddenly scrolling or changing your brush size on ya.

I like to use my keyboard as little as possible while painting, so I've tried to condense all my most important painting functions into my tablet and stylus. I also use AutoHotkey to help me configure some controls that wouldn't normally be possible.
My current setup is as follows. The four ExpressKeys are set to B (brush tool), Z (zoom tool), alt (eyedropper or zooming out), and spacebar (hand tool). The touch strip is set to [ and ], for controlling brush size. The rocker on the stylus is set to ctrl (move tool) and alt-ctrl-0 (actual pixels). Thanks to custom hotkeys in Photoshop and AutoHotkey, I can also step backward, go to the smudge tool, go to the eraser tool, go to the rotate view tool, and even bring up the color picker. Also, I used to have Flip Canvas Horizontal in there, but I replaced that with the rotate view tool when I got CS4. Anyway, it took me a while to figure out how to fit all this onto the limited number of controls on the Intuos3 4x5, but it was worth it, since I can accomplish most of my painting tasks without my hands leaving the tablet. Now, if only I could fit the clone stamp tool in there, too... ;)

What I ended up coming up with on the four keys was shift, brush tool, eyedropper, and space bar for panning. The touch key zooms in and out, and the rocker on the stylus are set to the brackets for increasing and decreasing brush size. I also have four more keys on the right hand side of my tablet, and I've only got step backward binded so far. I'll obviously add some more as I get better with photoshop. Maybe flip horizontal...
Thanks for all of the great ideas you guys.
