Auctane 07-13-2009, 06:06 PM http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/7691/mgac2.jpg
Ok, keeping the MGAC on a quick pace. You have 7 days, 128 triangles and 16,384 (128 x 128) pixels to create an item from your household. Any item(s) will work -> kitchen table, your computer, house plant, books on a bookshelf, power washer in the garage, anything.
Rules
128 Triangles max
128x128 single texture. 32 bit Diffuse only. You may not split it off into separate sheets.
The finished product should show a beauty shot, wireframes and the texture sheet.
Keep it simple.
The contest ends Wednesday, July 20th at 11:59 pm (in your local timezone to keep things from being too confusing). The winner will be announced on Thursday, July 21th.

First!
Though it's a damn shame I had to cut the texture map down to 128x128...

For me, it's a household item. Or at least one of the most used items in my house.

I love the Toast and the pillow, but why are these all in triangles instead of square poly's?

I'm pretty new to the industry so would you mind explaining that in more detail, learning 3ds max I was always told to keep polys to a minimal and to avoid making tri's at all cost.

Not sure who told you that but that only applies if you are going to be modelling in high poly.
And even in that case trianlges can be used without problems.
You will learn about this along the way.
Just keep on modelling and keep watching other peoples threads as a guide.

btw Lamont, loved that toaster. makes me want to start drinking and modeling too if thats what comes out
I'm pretty new to the industry so would you mind explaining that in more detail, learning 3ds max I was always told to keep polys to a minimal and to avoid making tri's at all cost. Most of today's rendering is triangle-based, rather than quad-based. Its a complicated discussion really and each method has its pros and cons, but one of the most basic reasons for triangles being the more widely used method is 3 points are always planar no matter what positions they hold in space -also- you cannot define a plane with any less than 3 points, making 3 your bottom line. Meanwhile, 4 points in space make it a lot more difficult to ensure a planar facet, especially when they're all hinging on each other. If you have a very non-planar quad in your viewport, you'll notice an implied edge left over from your graphics card auto-converting and then rendering it in terms it understands, triangles. In the end, its all about the triangles.
It is good high-poly modeling practice to keep your mesh in quads whenever possible because when you subdivide, you get a much cleaner result without so many poles and an overall prettier edgeflow. Sometimes its unavoidable, or not worth the extra time it would take to keep a mesh totally triangle free, but you'll learn to judge these situations as you continue modeling. For low poly models, anything is game since it will almost certainly need to be triangulated before use in the engine. Hope this helps.
This certainly isn't the proper place to discuss this sort of thing and I'm sure there are some more definitive sources out there so if anyone has a good redirect off the top of their head please share.

Ok, I'm a bit confused here -- I'd been thinking "ok, the contest ends wednesday of this week" and I finished my model tonight. Though it says Wednesday July 20th in the contest text, it's the 22nd today. Anyways, here's my entry:

Hehe, yeah I am on a roll with those times and dates. Great stuff everyone!
I asked Chris (previous MGAC winner) to judge this, I think he was up for it. Ill give him a short time to respond, otherwise I will proceed.

Ok Ive given Chris enough time. Ill go ahead and judge it.
Glad to see all the different work here. 2 entries from cowtrix even!
cowtrix: The amp, I like it, it is a good choice for something like this. You could have the front panel hog a bit more of the UV map to dedicate more detail where it is needed. On both the TV and the amp you could probably fool us by removing some of those polygons and we would never be the wiser.
Lamont: its ok i guess... :)
Boomz: That one is looking great! No real C&C.
sOke: thats gross. and thumbs up. There is one loop of edges in that handle i think you could do withouth though.
velenosangue: Clever with the headphones, it threw me off at first. I like it!
I am pleased to announce that this spectacular picture of a trophy goes to the first place winner.
And the Winner is Everyone!!

Yes everyone who participated! You all win!
To simplify the next MGAC it would be best to have a single person cook it up. I think we would all be honored if Lamont would create the next challenge.
See you guys on the next round!
