As far as date/time, the most convenient would be Sunday registration day (August 2nd). Previous years have been on Sunday (atleast LA and Boston as far as I can remember). Although if there are no parties this year (as it seems to be the case) the date won't be much of an issue except Thursday when the official SIGGRAPH Reception will take place.

Last year was Sunday, something like 8pm.

One vote for monday, or any other day after sunday.

Whoa! Didn't see that coming. If it's during the week it probably has to be after 9pm (after the evening show of the CAF).

I actually prefer Sunday as well, or Monday at the latest.

So far, the tallies are pointing towards having the meetup on Sunday evening. I agree that it may be a bit difficult during the week, when the conference actually starts since there is already a ton of stuff going on. Even if there may not be a lot of parties this year, SIGGRAPH talks and whatnot go on pretty late. Especially the animation festival.

Does anyone else think it's ironic that we are about to travel to New Orleans and haven't heard of any parties yet? I mean, this is where Marti Gras happens!

Either way, we can make this an awesome year! Just a thought though. ;)

Yeah, there were no flights for the saturday and only very late for the sunday around 10 p.m. at reasonable prices.

I know that me and my gang would probably all like Sunday.

With the lack of official parties this year I'm pretty sure people are going to go way out on a limb to cluster together and meet new folks and create their own gatherings.

Somehow this is all going to work out.

If the large companies are holding on to their money to keep their employees gainfully employed back at the ranch, thats the most responsible decision. Can't be firing half of Canada to throw a party in New Orleans. Autodesk technically would have to hold 3 major user group meetings now! But I guess the cards arent all out yet?

I forgot to say that I am traveling with a group of 12 and possibly more from Indianapolis. We will all be arriving Saturday and Sunday, so Sunday would work best for all of them as well as myself.

I just thought I'd speak for them since they may not get on here to talk. Haha!

I'd love to go, but I don't arrive until 10 p.m. on Sunday.
If it's late, then I'm game.
As for parties, the Brazilians (me included) are planning our own Marti Gras on the French Quarter on Wednesday night. And we're experts on Marti Gras...

Everyone is invited to join us on our night on the town.

For parties chindian refer to this thread:

SIGGRAPH 2009 parties (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=293&t=779518)

Though this year it seems almost no company will have parties/user group meetings. Apparently there's no Chapters party this year, unless they actually announce it at the convention center.

People shouldn't forget BOFs as well (which reminds me...).

As for parties, the Brazilians (me included) are planning our own Marti Gras on the French Quarter on Wednesday night. And we're experts on Marti Gras.

This will be after the Brazilian's BOF I presume?

But the main thing is that we should be talking is where to hold it. At least in San Diego and Los Angeles they were held at restaurants in one of the big hotels (Boston was some sort of club/bar). I think last year at the hotel was great. I checked some of the conference hotels and the choices are not that great (some have very expensive restaurants, others barely have a few tables). There are also places like the Hard Rock Cafe by Jackson Square, where reservations could be made if we get a head count. Not sure about the restaurant at Jax Brewery though.

Yep. It looks like the meetup will be on Sunday evening. That's according to the consensus of this thread and the conflicts with other events.

Now the question is what time and where should we meet. Any suggestions for either? Any locals know of some good places to eat where we can also get a fairly large group of people together?

If it's Sunday it has to be around 8pm since Registration closes 6pm. If it were held Mon-Fri, at least 9:30pm to allow people to get there after the Evening Theatre.

I personally would like it in the week.... I don't know if it interferes w/ other parties that I don't know about. So, I lived there for 14 years. However, after the hurricane, good number of restaurants left. So here are a few that I always liked:

http://lukeneworleans.com/
awesome food!!! but closes at 11pm.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/angeli-on-decatur-new-orleans
eaten here many times, Decatur St especially on this area is soooo awesome. To me, it's a truer reflection of New Awwleans. Decatur eventually winds to Frenchman St, which is where all th awesome bars and nightlife happens. It's not true cajun food, but it's cheap and close to the night life.

http://www.portofcallneworleans.com/
eaten here too. Awesome burgers...again not sooo creole/cajun but good eats nevertheless and close to the action.

http://www.acmeoyster.com
huge gulf oysters. If you haven't had them, wow you're in for a real treat. They're really great with Crystals hot sauce and crackers. Oh man!! they're amazing!!! And this place is pretty creole as well. And it's in the quarter and it's close to Bourbon St.

Also general traveling advice:
-bring lots of linen and cotton clothes. no polyester. It's going to be scorching and humid.
-You can drink your drinks in public last time I've been there. I know you can't do that here in California
-You will eat a lot of greasy food. If you get queasy with greasy food....just sayin
-There are no rules for smoking in bars. Everyone can smoke in bars.

Some nice bars there by the looks of things. I'd personally like it Mon-Wed, a lot of people are flying in on Sunday so like last year, missed the CG-Meet. Also there's a real lack of parties this year with Autodesk scaling down so no Autodesk, and even worse, no Soft party :(

That's a good point about when the meetup would have to be on certain days. I'm not sure we will want to meet at 9:30pm after all the festivities of SIGGRAPH on Monday through Thursday or on Sunday after 7-8pm?

That's a tough call, but I'd say the earlier the better so we can get a nice dinner and hang out for a bit.

The only 2 days that are tight are Monday (Papers Preview, Chapters Party, Nuke UG) and Thursday (Reception). Usually that's why Sunday night is best, doesn'tinterfere with anything and most people arrive by Sunday evening (except basic pass or just for the exhibition floor).

Anyway the Acme Oyster house is indeed awesome, ate there last time, great food.

The good things about Acme Oyster and Luke's is that they accept reservations. Angeli and Port of Call don't. Unless people don't mind being spread all over the place.

The other options are like in previous years do it at a hotel. For example the Sheraton (the HQ hotel) has a bar open till 2am and a bistro open till 10pm:

Pelican Bar (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton/property/dining/attraction_detail.html?propertyID=353&attractionId=32082)

Anyone know of more options at hotels as a backup plan?

hmmm....I guess I'm not realizing how big this group is going to be. Well, in that case Acme and it's close to Bourbon. Also, I don't know if you knew this or not, but there is no last call at bars....well almost all the bars especially on Bourbon. I've stayed on bourbon until 6am in the morning...I mean I can't do that now but if you want you can stay there until the sun rises and they will still be serving alcohol.

Lola--you will love Frenchman St. There's a bar/club/whateveryouwanttocallit place called Brazil cafe and there's wonderful Latin beats and I use to go there for Halloween and other events there. I think also the owner is Brazilian.

Well last year in Los Angeles it was probably 40-50 people at peak time. People came and went during the night so probably a lot more people were there overall. I have some video of that. Boston was a little bit lower attendance, though that was the first one that was organized. In San Diego didn't mabe it was around 30-40 by the time I got there, I arrived late because I went to the Sake Barrel BOF first. Just from seeing this thread I'm guessing we have maybe a 30 solid head count, but if we organize it quickly I'm sure attendance could maybe double. Perhaps Wednesday would be better then for those that arrive later for SIGGRAPH, and without major parties the only thing to worry about is maybe doing it after the Evening Theatres. I still think 9:30 during the weekend is fine. Last time the partying just got started around that time. Seeing bunch of CG people buzzed around Bourbon Street. You can still go to hear Jazz, Blue Grass or whatever much later in the night.

And I didn't know about no last call down there, though I had my suspicions after seeing bunch of drunk people early in the morning.

OK I emailed Acme Oyster and we could conceivably reserve their second floor room which seats something like 50 people. They actually sent me options for buffets, open bar and the oyster bar. Actualy I'm eaning now to having the party on Wednesday night 9:30pm. I made a survey based on the Acme choices above. Let me know if there's any other questions anyone of you want me to add.

I mean I hope it was ok I made a survey. If anyone of you don't like this whole survey thing, it's cool I can take it off. Also, this survey will NOT ask you to register or sign in or anything. It just takes you to the survey.

Thanks so much malducin for making the reservations and marceylee for creating that survey. I think that's a great idea!

I'm just throwing it out there that I am allergic to shellfish, so I have to watch what I eat in New Orleans because my throat closes up FAST if I have anything like shrimp, crab legs, etc. Sunday or Wednesday is fine with me, I just don't want it interfering with anything, which it doesn't sound like it will.

For me, I chose the cheap buffet price because well...it's a buffet and I can go back for more. That's pretty pricy for my blood too, expecially if you throw in the drinks. I'm only 20 years old though, so I doubt I'll be getting that. Those are my thoughts.

Thanks again guys. You rock! I can't wait to meet you all at the meetup. I guess now we have to start deciding on what day to go. Maybe another survey would do the trick. ;)

I'm down with either night (of course i say that not knowing what my volunteer shifts are yet). I did just receive an email that the 2009 Siggraph Student Volunteer Session will be Sunday at 6 pm (I have no idea how long that will last, but it has 4 guest speakers and a Q&A session), so we have to keep that in mind. If we're leaning toward the Acme place I say the $22 buffet and the 16/20 drink packages (I put in my vote on the survey) since most of us are all still students and haven't landed our dream jobs as of yet (maybe that will change during the week for some lucky ones).

Also, some of you have mentioned Siggraph Chapters and Nuke usergroup meetings on Monday. I've never really heard of the Siggraph chapters meetings. But I'm psyched about the Nuke meeting. If anyone knows where I can register/ get info on these I would appreciate it?

Whoa, I didn't make any reservations, just asked for info, but seems there are many exceptions for the food: oyster nightnamers, kosher (what's wrong with bottomfeeding animals ;-), allergies, etc. Next thing people aren't gonna eat crocodile sausage! I guess I'll have to go with Adam for dinner here (but don't aggravate the waitresses this time LOL)

Seriuosly if it's going to be a problem there are safer choices. As I mentioned previously it can be held a a hotel restaurant like the Sheraton, or at a chain restaurant like Hard Rock Cafe (by Jackson Square), or Luke's like Marcey suggested. I'll just ask Acme if we can just rent the room and maybe the open bar, but no buffets so that anyone can order whatever from their menu.

There are no SIGGRAPH events on Sunday, except for co-located events (and those usaully have similar hour to SIGGRAPH 8:30am-5:30pm). The other thing volunteers actually work on Sunday is showing people where to pick materials, helpat the Registration area, etc.

If you never heard of the Chapters party you're missing big, it's one of the oldest and biggest (since it's open to everyone). Last time at New Orleans was at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritville, which was a blast. Information for the Nuke meeting of course can be found at The Foundry's website.

Haha! I guess I jumped the gun there. I assumed reservations were made and don't know why I thought that.

Anywho, there are a lot of things to take into consideration when you have so many people to please. And honestly, it won't happen. There will be people that can't make it for this reason or the other or can't eat a certain food for this reason or the other. I like your idea of reserving the room, paying for open bar, and then letting each person order whatever they want off the menu.

But, the menu you listed for one of the buffets (Creole jambalaya, red beans and rice, fried catfish, fried shrimp, hush puppies, cole slaw or french fries) it seems like there is a decent variety in there. For me, I could eat the jambalaya, beans and rice, hush puppies and french fries. I'd be totally cool with that.

This sounds like a pretty cool place since we can rent out a room that seats 50.

By Student Volunteer Session, do you mean the orientation and introduction or is it an actual event when there is a discussion panel. I remember in Singapore, we just had an orientation that first night and get the run down of everything. We did some fun team building exercises too. It's never awkward breaking the ice. ;) Haha!

Also, I never heard anything about the event on Sunday night. Where did you hear that because I want to make sure I didn't miss an email announcement or anything like that? Thanks a lot for the heads up though.

Yep, it's an actual event, first time I've heard of one on Registration day (besides the colocated events). And it seems to be for SVs, so I don't know why I got the email. Anyway it's about how the panelists got started, what would they do different now and some of their projects they've worked on. Panelists are: Paul Lambert (Comp Supe at DD), Evan Hirsch (Creative Director at Microsoft Live Labs), Jeff White (Associate VFX Supe at ILM) and Fran Vitz (CG Supe at Electronic Arts Vancouver)

OK got some info back from Acme Oyster House. No more than 40 people can order from the general menu in the reef room and in that case the room rent fee is higher. Three ways of doing the bar; 1) Bar Package 2) Cash Bar 3) Bar by Consumption.

So, should we do the menu or the buffet. I guess bar we can decide a bit later.

BTW, how can your reply come in before my previous message? LOL

That is a bit strange how that happened. I have no clue why it did that, but it's definitely funny.

there are some cheap eats in the quarter, but I don't know if they will accomodate large groups:

Maspero's--I use to waitress here. You will get great local food, and cheap just watch out for the waitresses. Not here for the meetup...just not here. but it is on Decatur, and close to the action.

yoyomas--http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/5CbJgHWgvjyDRw9Sl4BXhg?select=oqFkSSl0vtEO9pG4TYAqGg---safe burger joint.

I do like Luke's but it's on St. Charles but not as close to Bourbon as Acme (walking-wise).

I think maybe we should get the cheapest buffet option so we don't have to pay for the higher price of renting w/o food b/c we're gonna eat there anyways. And for the bar, you know there's so much to try on bourbon. I think it might be alcohol overload. the street is lined with daiquiri shops...you can carry your drink around....

We can just get oysters separately.

What about in the casino near the convention center?

Also I wonder if they have good fried chicken around there. Popeyes claims to be started there and they are my favorite chain for it.

I got via CGW, don't know why, never been an SV, maybe they just sent it to a general list. I'm not sure if they'll allow non-SVs to attend.

Hey, I found a Twitter status that talked about the Student Volunteer Session panel on Sunday, August 2 at 6 pm saying it will stream live online on the Computer Graphics World (http://www.cgw.com/) website. I guess it means that there is definitely a way you can watch this without being a student volunteer, you just may ot be able to physically attend.

Seems the easiest option would be to just rent the room and have people order from the menu. I'm planning on stuffing myself with oysters. Here's the menu by the way:

I'm guessing people would prefer bar by cash?

Sweet! Those are all the choices I made. What are we going to do with these results? Are they set in stone? This could just be used for the buffet because I think someone was mentioning earlier about just buying your own drinks as you like.

malducin
07-24-2009, 05:29 AM
We could just make both options open: cash bar (since some don't drink and some drink a lot) and order from the menu (because kosher, some want oysters, some might order much less than the buffet and some more). So I guess just rent the room for 40 people (haven't made a headcount here).

The only thing would be date and time. Seems no one has complained about Tuesday. Things end at 6pm (for the most part), so what time? 8pm? That way people who don't go to the ET can start, and those that do go will still get there at peak time of the meeting.

JCork
07-24-2009, 06:26 AM
I think just renting the room and having everyone order what they want for themselves would work out well. Less confusion that way and that way nobody will have issues with allergies or sickness from what the buffet has to offer. Same goes for the drinks.

Tuesday at 8pm sounds good. I haven't heard much of anything going on that night. Is it going to cost money to rent the room at the restaurant?

Hahaha Josh, you crack me up. Nevertheless, my only words of wisdom is that this restaurant knows the mass of people that could presumably show up. I wouldn't call last year a disaster, but a) many people could not sit with the main group and b) the wait staff and establishment seemed mighty perturbed by the numbers that kept rolling in. Regardless, I hope beer and oysters make a merry dance together in my belly.

Are you making it to SIGGRAPH this year? I haven't been able to talk to you in a while and it's unfortunate I have to ask you through here. If you don't have a place to stay or pass, I have both of those, so looks like you don't have a choice.

Hopefully there won't be an overwhelming amount of people like last year because I would hate to make the staff pissed off. But, on the other hand, the more the merrier!

Anywho, you bring up a good point. We should definitely try to get out on Sunday (even Saturday, if you're up for it). I was maybe thinking we could just explore. Walk through the city, ask people for suggestions of good eats, mingle with locals, hit up a bar (that I can get into), roam the streets, and show the city a wild side of SIGGRAPH!

Think I went too far? Haha! Really, I have no clue. I'm up for anything!

I'm also still waiting to hear back from my mom, who used to live in New Orleans. She is going to give me a list of good places to visit there, given they are still in business and didn't get demolished by the storms. I'll post that when she gives that to me, if she ever does.

Pretty sure we're having a TL dinner on Saturday night J, just like we did in Singapore.

But if things go like they usually do, we'll make a bunch of awesome plans ahead of time and change them all at the last minute.

Maybe marceylee can show us some cool places. I want to go to THE BEST jazz house there is. Where should I go? lol

You're probably right about making and then breaking plans. That's what usually happens, so right away I say we just plan to roam the streets Sunday night. I don't mind getting lost in a foreign place from time to time. It seems to happen to me every SIGGRAPH anyways. Ha!

Whoa, why confirm on Tuesday withiout first doing a count in here and a headcount?

As far as Thursday that's the only big no-no night,i's the SIGGRAPH reception which ends at 10pm and we saw that Monday are the "other" parties. I thought most people had decided/voted for Wednesday.

This is exactly the reason this is done on Sunday, though it seems and unusually high number of people don't arrive Sunday.

As far as Sunday I was thinking of goingto watch Moon (since it's on a limited release) and then go for dinner/drinks. The other option might be watching GIJoe although it'll probably open at the AMC Westbank (which is bit far) just because there's going to be a talk about it by DD.

There weren't any complaints about having the meetup on Tuesday and many people actually suggested it be on that date, so that's how that day came to be. Sunday there won't be as many people arriving yet and it's the SV orientation, Monday is the SIGGRAPH Chapters party, Wednesday is The Motion Capture Society user group and possibly another user group meeting (so I've heard), and Thursday is the SIGGRAPH reception, so it made sense to have it on Tuesday.

Ok guys I totally backed out of a spa day with my brother's wife that I planned 2 months ago for this. Somebody better eat some raw oysters with me. It takes a lot willpower for a girl to cancel a spa day.

......wait a minute are there any ladies who's going to this thing other than me?

wait, where is my name??? You guys count me out? arrr :banghead:

I will eat Oyster with you MarceyLee:D I eat them like drinking water

YIKES! That takes quite a bit of will power. Goes to show how friggin' awesome this group really is. ;)

Also, anyone who is planning on going, make sure you add your name to the running guest list we have going on here. This is so we can get a vague head count of how many people we should expect at the meetup.

BTW, CGTalk Meetup will take place at the Reef Room (on the second floor) of the Acme Oyster House. Josh will probably have to add that info on the first post. Also we might have to ask for a small contribution to pay for the room rental. Everyone can order off the menu (no buffets) and there will be a cash bar.

Also don't forget to bring you portable DVD player, laptop, for those wanting to show their demo reels, etc.

Somebody better eat some raw oysters with me.

I might order 2 plates, one of raw, one of chargrilled, so don't feel alone.

Uh oh! If that's true then we may be in trouble and have to split up the group. The reservation malducin took care of is for 40 tops and they seem like they are going to be sticklers.

But, the best thing we can do is go off of estimates here, so maybe just get there early to reserve your spot?

If we had chosen one of the buffet options we could have gotten a capacity for 50 people and a lower room fee. Oh well.

Worst case people who can't fit in I guess will have to go toa regular table until someone comes out. We'll have to play it by ear. The only thing that might help is if people are coming and going (say late arrivals from the Evening Theatre)

Wow what a cluster bomb thread. If the venue was still gonig to be the Acme Oyster place I noticed it closes at 10:00pm Sunday thru Thursday.

If that is true that will hardly be enough time for misfits like us.

Whoa, didn't notice that. Do people want to start earlier? That way we can have people come and go. Most stuff ends at 6pm at SIGGRAPH, so maybe we could move the time to 7pm?

Let me know I can probably call tomorrow Acme or meet them in person and expand the hours.

At 10 p.m,, when it closes, we can just head elsewhere. We just have to make sure the folks who are coming late know where we are.
Any suggestions for late night places? I think it may be hard to swing all these people into one hotel room.

Well, I just heard word of another party that night. I think it was planned last minute, so there was no telling. It starts at 9pm, so after the Acme closes we could all head over to that. What do you say? Then we wouldn't have to change anything. Maybe it'll work out better than we planned.

Without thinking I just made made a post on here and after I published it, knew my name could not have changed to Juan. Hahaha! Regardless, sorry about that. Sorry I had to miss the meetup everyone. The friend that I'm staying with was stayin at his girls house that night and I don't have a key to his house. So I choose a bed over a party. I really hate that I missed meeting everyone. I have my last shift tomorrow (friday) from 3:15-5:15 and I'll be in the SV room for a good half hour after my shift. Don't be shy, come up and let me know who you are and that your active on the forums. I'm the big black guy and don't worry, I don't bite.

Good Party guys. This was a weird week. I have no smart phone or laptop and therefore wasn't online for a full week. Weird to be at Siggraph and to be completely unplugged too.

Anyway, it was great to meet everyone that I met. So see you all in LA in a year?

I think this was the best party I attended while at Siggraph. I met truly wonderful people from all over the world and had a blast.
I don't think I'll make it to next year's conference, but I hope you do it again in years to come.

I was a little disappointed Malducin wasn't there. I was expecting Ironman to blast in and than drink a barrel of booze.

Hahaha. I'll do that in LA. I'm still pissed I missed the Sake party because it was improperly listed at the Sheraton. I still got my fair share of drinking during the weekend at Muriel's and The Gumbo Shop (note to self, don't drink on an empty stomach).

Sorry for not being there, but as I mentioned I might miss it. Didn't get my confirmation for the Lucasfilm party until noon Tuesday, and I had to attend to say hi to a few people. I thought I might then be able to go to Acme's but the Lucasfilm party didn't end till 11pm. Glad to hear everyone had a great time. I did make it to Acme for my share of oysters the Saturday after SIGGRAPH.

But next time lets have the party on Sunday, preferably at a hotel. I promise to out-tequila anyone hehe, and do something really ridiculous ;-).

Ohh, and marceylee, thanks for pointing out Frenchman St. Too bad the Blue Nile closes early (or doesn't open at all) on Sundays. But seem like a great place for better music than most stuff on Bourbon.

See ya next year.

Next time I will have to book a flight for night time on Saturday rather than the morning. I missed out on Friday night on Bourbon St!

I'd go to the LA one if you did the ironman entrance. there was a figure of you in one of the booths.

Maybe I'll do my Blues Brothers impersonation instead...

It did see a lot of people leave by Friday, not many people left to do stuff. Titus and I did manage to get some great food and later go to Preservation Hall, to hear some fantastic music.

It was strange on Bourbon though. A sorority (TKE) arrived out our hotel lke Thursday night and were in full force at Bourbon. Then on Saturday was the Dirty Linen charity race around the French Quarter which caused a bt of a mess, and then there were a lot of people (men and women) in red dresses at night.

oh, yeah!! we saw them too!!! :scream: a few started out that Friday night in Bourbon Street running through. i was a little taken back even around that atmosphere-!

we saw the league of them as we left for our flight Saturday morning. it's some sort of tradition of 'The Running of the Red Dress'. they wouldn't tell us of its origins or what route they were taking; the Driver of our shuttle warned all the other guys about them & where they were starting out from once we accidentally found that out.

it was kinda disturbing seeing these huge, tall guys walking around in semi-disguise & in bright red dresses. what would their employers & families think of them if they saw them that way? guess that was why they were partially masked & keeping secrets....?

I saw that too. I didn't know what to make of it. Although I figured I should probably stay out of the way. The pinkies. They started off at Friday afternoon.

I popped into the meetup for a brief moment. I agree with the above comment about having the meetup on Sunday.

Yes, I stayed for the weekend. That was a Hasher race, the Red Dress run http://nolareddress.tumblr.com/post/114434585/hashers . They run from bar to bar and drink and run and drink again, with a party and drinks at the end of the race. Which means they are drinkers with a running problem. The Hashers are nation wide.

Also, there were a bunch of smokers and high end models checking into my hotel for that cigar and pipe and tobacco conference that was gearing up. I overheard a couple of fun quips such as "we started smoking at 5:00 am this morning" and "I can barely talk and can't taste anything, but am looking forward to trying your cigars later."

'Hashers', hunh? hm....

if memory serves, the original language from where we get hashish is related to hash(er); it was a weed or plant that was used to make potent drugs for assassins to use when out for their kill. so there may be some relation to the modern-day 'Hasher' title here after all. interesting. i wonder if any of them were at the SIG Conference?:curious:

and the quip about the smoking in the morning & loss of taste buds, but they still wanted to smoke even more is just sad & hilarious! don't they get the point??? :banghead: wow.
