Here are some early character concepts for our video entry. I was aiming for a french look, inspired by movies like the Triplets de Belleville.

We had two modelers doing two different takes on the same design. This was done so we could later take the best of both and make an even stronger character.

A solid combination, taking the best of both models and putting them together. We found this also helped keep the model closer to the original design.

Your character designa nd modeling are excellent but the shading/lighting really needs improvment I think. MAybe the material could be less plastic. FOr the lighting, if you want him backlighted, maybe choose only one side for the bright light, and add maybe a little color for the other side. ANd maybe a fill light going front of him to make it less dark.
That's my opinion, but when I see the character you've made on your portfolio which are references for me, I'm sure that wil be great lighted.

Thanks for the input on lighting and shading. In this test, the lights were placed to evaluate the skin shader's SSS transmission around the ear. This is my first time using SSS type shader on something like this and I've gotta say. I like it.

Here's a really initial skin texture. We haven't done any sub-surface scattering yet, this is just a colour texture on a lambert.

Our model is pretty much locked down at this point. He's now ready to be rigged.

Chris has started rigging the character. The weights aren't painted yet, but the basic rig is in place.

Still need to do blendshapes for the facial expressions. That'll be next!

Rigging and painting weights is now pretty much finished. Chris is going to add dynamics to the hair in a couple of weeks. Until then we'll be working on animation and blendshapes.
