View Full Version : Referenced Model
morgn 07-29-2003, 09:07 AM ok, ive made this character, face shapes and all and im using animated texture supports on the eyes. My model is rigged and enveloped, so i exported it as a model.
I put the imported reference model into my new scene and began animating.
The problem is now is that the face shapes dont work in the mixer and the textures that were on the eyes have dissapeared (probably cos i couldnt freeze them in order for them to move (?)) . The texture supports are still there, but the referenced model is locked from head to toe and i cant replace the original texture.
Are there any solutions to my two problems? I dont want to start my walk cycle again with a basic model because time is running out.
Thnks in advance,
Morgn.

Change the texture setup on the original model.
If you don't want to loose the face shapes, you should be able to move them to the original model where they should be.
there is great reply about using refernce models from Ludo on the xsi list, do a search here.

of here it is:

I just don't them, except for static or non-constraning objects, after all the headaches. They are supposedly much improved in 3.5 but I'll wait till I see people not complaining about them.

Although i may be beating myself up for no reason, im gonna try and stick with the reference model- its something ive got to learn for my own development!!
I have sorted the textures problem - i chose to rotate the spheres of the eyes rather than the textures.
The only other problem left is this:
I have made my shape keys previously and exported the model. Imported as a reference model to a new scene. The shape keys drag onto the mixer etc. but the shapes do not work.
Ive noticed that there is two mixers- one for the model and one for the scene. I cant drag the shape keys into the shape folder of the scene mixer- but i dont know whether that would work anyway. Im purely guessing...
Does anyone know the solution to this?
Cheers,
Morgn.
shapes need their clusters and their shape node under the clusters copied over too
I would still recommend to go back and do your shapes on the original model.

The shape keys were created on the original model, but im going to try and add them to the original mixer and then export...
Update...
Its sad, but ive given up on the reference model. I created all the shapes/tracks/parameter sets in the original and worked fine, but they didnt work in the imported scene.
thanks for all yours help.

Editing referenced model is just like trying to spot similarities in the neighbours child to you. It is not your child, even you've created it.
Call him over sometimes, but don't ever try to manipulate.

not even draw all over his face with indelible marker send him back and blame it on my child?
Ive sorted it now- thanks everyone.

Im pretty much trying to do the same as morgan, but gave up on reference models a long time ago....i went onto merging scene files [ 2 scenes, environement and character] when i tried to merge the character into the environment file, it left all teh face shapes mixer bits, so my sliders didnt work, so i did it the other way, and brought the environment file into the charater scene, it solved that problem, but now when i move the character in teh scene there are some points the get pulled *way* out of place...
There has got to be an easier way! any ideas, suggestions would be cool...
cheers
