By default my computer has 256MB of DDR RAM. Well I put in another 256MB which means it should be 512, but when I go into my System Inforamtion it says my computer only has 256.

This is my first time installing RAM and I was wondering what I had to do to get my computer to read the RAM.

well... u seriously need to read the thread at the top of this forum that says what u should do when posting a question.... u forgot to tell us anything about ur computer other than ur trying to install memory. A lot of factors can come into play with regard to hardware so all details are necessary. But anyhow, if I were to take a crap shoot at it... I would say that your board uses shared RAM slots... which means that you can either use single sided memory on one or both slots or a double sided RAM chip in one slot... but I'm not sure if the single sided configuration of RAM applies to DDR anymore. In another case, your system might be some generic from emachines like I have often seen where the memory cap is 256MB regardless of what u stick in.

well it says 512 now. The problem was I didn't have the ram cart in tightly.

i'm using an emachines btw.

Haha, poor emachines :thumbsdow

I was tempted into getting one about 2 and a half years ago because they were more affordable then dells. Thank goodness I didn't get it.

hey, eMachines are great computers! I just got mine and I'm loving it. Definetly better then my HP and Compaq computers not to mention it's half the price.
