What do you guys think? Good results? No plugins used :)

and this one

well.. very cool!
what did u use? hairdept? solidspline?
i'm very interested :) do you have some animation tests? i did a small deformation test with some hairdepartment hairs. you can find it here: fur test (http://www.stufenboard.s6.to/basti/movies/movie_RD_002.mov)
just hairdept and bones... i'm looking forward sooo much for shave and a haircut :)
because my test looks like a doormat and no way like something furry ;)

oh hey basti thanks for the comments :)
well i didn't use any plugins. this is pure cinema 4D, I assume hairdept and solidspline are plugins?

oh and I saw your animation test, looks like a shaved sheep which is not necessarily a bad thing! :) i'll try to make some animation tests.

Looks great. Did you do it with the duplicate and arrange function? I used that creating this image here. I made a rectangular patch of grass and then instanced it. The rest of the grass below the threes is just a texture map.

damnit henry, i might actually have to go forth and say you did something nice......NOT!!! Well, it's actually good, too bad your technique is so darn limited....[now you'll have to explain your technique]. No crit, the stuff is quite...g........G-....G.......good, but i'm hating the polygon count.

Nice work :) ......is that matrix extrude?

Very nice Henry. Explain your procedure of creation, and I would love to see an animation test. Is the poly count high (i ask almost knowing the answer)

well kiwi guessed right this is pure matrix extrude, but on a really dense rentagle, so yes fxgogo polygon count IS mighty high :) to be precise the grass BELOW (not the one posted first) consists of 157300 polygons (ouch! - The grass posted first has way too many polygons :) ) but I believe the result are quite interresting, I'm rendering an animation as I'm writing this post and will show it as soon as it's finished.

So basically
1. Create a simple plane w 110X110 segments. If you want a more dense/better looking grass go for more segments

2. Make it editable and then go to Structure -> Edit Surface -> Crumble and only change the X radius to 2 (instead of 10). This will make the grass look WAY less uniform

Should look something like this so far

Now

4. Go to Structure -> Edit Surface -> Matrix Extrude and complete as shown below:

Then add your texture (I used a green gradient) and make sure you select Spherical Projection because UVW Projection has a really ugly effect which I haven't found a way to fix

And voila! you have grass, really slow rendering grass (this one took 6 minutes for a 640X480 render) but pretty nice nevertheless :) Feel free to ask questions

ouhh i know the high amount of memory this takes ;)..
please try these two cool plugins.
hairdepartment creates splinebased hair around your (poly)object and polygons around these splines to make them visible at the renderprocess. and if you animate the splines (there's a deformer in the hairdept plugin for that) thze polys move like the splines! of course this needs a lot of memory, too.
but now there's paul everett - the plugin master - he wrote a very helpful plugin called solidsplines, which renders splines :)
it doesn't need such a big amount of memory. you can easily render complete grassfields with this way! and quite fast!!

this is just a very rubbish render i created in a few seconds:

here are the links: (the plugins are free of course) :)
hairdepartment (http://www.bgs-group.de)
solidsplines - hmm can't find it now.. guess you have to search the plugincafe, sorry - but it's ther i'm sure!

sweeeet!
both the matrix extrude tut (thanx Henry, always wondered if there is anything usefull about the matrix extrude) and the Hair plugin are both really usefull:applause:

now to make some arm-pit hair :D

Thanks for that info Henry  ,very useful

Basti cheers for the plugin as well.Did a Plugin cafe search for the other one and came up empty as well.

Henry how does the grass look with a cubic mapping?

Cheers

i found it :)
here's the link:

paul's plugins (http://www.bookwoodarts.de/pe/index.htm)
it's somewhere on the news page (in the middle)
have fun and take a look at paul's very interesting particle plugins, please :)

Thanks basti

Yes he is definitely very talented,no doubting that :)

I find I have plugins that I have never even gotten around to using yet :)
