Have you tried the DOF layer shader?

It's a post-processing effect, but it is very fast, and uses a simple start and end radius with a blur amount in pixels.

This is in v7.

You can also check this link from Ian in the EIAS Tutorials section:

Hi,

It's a lot better to use Ian's tutorial and do the DOF in post than rendering out a DOF blurred animation. If you don't like the DOF settings rendered out of EI you'd have to re-render. Using Ian's method, you can adjust and even animate the amount of blur or even reverse the blur effect in After Effects. It's a very, very good way to do DOF.

thanks i will like to use Camera DOF since the camera agressive movement looks great and but my main focus gets blurry since my animation includes some sperms flying to meet the egg. it was planned to be in 2d but i wanted a lot of control over my camera.
With Ian tutorial it works for a still but not true DOF.I will try Dave option.
I will coment my results on Monday.

Personally, I usually render out to Planar Z-depth, convert it to Quicktime, and post the DOF effect in AE with Frischluft's filter. Not perfect, but faster and I get more control and better edges than with the DOF shader.

Perfect , thanks scimmo that is a good solution, i forgot about the planar Z depth render feature.I still have plenty of time and i am using Phong Rendering so is even faster since i do not need any GI or fancy raytrace.

Ok guys i got it to work with the Planar Z-Depth , i just save my animation with different names, when is done i just name them with the sasme name and it works very good, the only thing is that i can see some fringe in my animations, which i can covered up with a fast blur but is not meant to work this way, i have read in EIwebsite that these could be related with the minimum and max sampling.
Do you guys remeber what is the workflow when working with Planar Z-Depth?
I will like to say that it works very fast, i wish other app had these.Thanks.

I recall the tip from the EIAS masters regarding z-depth was to render the output at twice the size, without anti-aliasing and textures. Resize in After Effects when compositing with main footage. Fixes the jaggies.
