View Full Version : SIGGRAPH 2009 Animation Festival
JCork 07-09-2009, 08:52 PM I thought I'd start a thread about the animation festival since there wasn't one yet. Seems like it's going to be really interesting. I just stumbled across this today via the SIGGRAPH Twitter account (@siggraph).

Here's a list of all the films that have been chosen to be featured in the festival. Just by the thumbnails of each, I'm getting goosebumps! We're getting so close!

Good luck and congratulations, if you were selected!

Thanks for posting these Josh! I've been really excited about this year's CAF for a while now, and those links have definitely kicked my anticipation up a notch.
I can't describe how honored and happy I am to have my film selected, and I recognize a few other shorts on the list, too. I saw Fabrice Joubert's French Roast, Erick Oh's Symphony, and Sukwon Shin's Unbelievable Four at the Atlanta Film Festival back in October, and they're all excellent - Symphony is a really nice abstract piece, while French Roast and Unbelievable Four are hysterical comedies with very different styles.
There are a few more pieces I recall seing (at least in part) online... mostly here at CGTalk, in fact. I remember the familiar ones as being great, and by the looks of it, everything that's new to me will be spectacular. I can't wait!
If memory serves, this was posted on CGTalk a while back, but in case anyone missed it: Here's the trailer for CAF 2009 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRNQMxCZ6eA), which offers a glimpse at the content in motion.

Your welcome and congrats on getting your film in! That must be such a great feeling. I have seen that trailer and reading all of these posts along with that is just teasing me. Not sure I can wait another couple weeks without going crazy! Haha!

Which days would you recommend going to the festival? I want to do some conferences as well.

Thanks again, Josh :)
Womball - Fortunately, it looks like the Evening Theater won't overlap with too much else at SIGGRAPH. It's going to play 6:30 - 9pm Monday through Thursday, and most other conference events will be over by that time of day. Judging by the schedule (http://www.siggraph.org/s2009/attendees/schedule/index.php), the Job Fair, Exhibition Floor, Sessions and Galleries all end at or before 6pm (with an exception or two).
In the evenings, our main choices seem to be the Computer Animation Festival, Contests & Competitions, and Performances & Special Events. Between those options, it's difficult to make recommendations without more detailed screening schedules, but I'm excited for everything!

looks like our piece, Vilnius Guggenheim, is on the curated reel this year but I'm not entirely sure. It's listed in the curated reel for the Friday afternoon showing but looks like it's in the Juried section for the evening ones.

Yeah, the section for the CAF is really confusing this year. Even though they mention all evening shows are the same, I think they only include a selection of the juried films and curated films. No way they can show 135 pieces in one hour (for the juried films). The Afternoon films only showed juried pieces once, except for the Visual Music ones. And there is no mention of the animation theaters, so if you miss a specific piece one day, you're SOL. Ts is almost as bad as last year. Hope I'm wrong.

malducin - You're right that they're not showing all 135 films nightly at the Evening Theater. As far as I can tell, the films listed on the Evening Theater page (http://www.siggraph.org/s2009/computer_animation_festival/screenings/index.php) under "Juried Reel" (14 pieces) and "Curated Reel" (12 pieces) are the those that'll play every night, and (like you said) we'll have just one chance to see most of the other films in their Afternoon Theater screenings. It's a shame there can't be multiple screenings for every film, but I'll definitely make a point to see all that I can.
jdollus - I see Vilnius-Guggenheim under "Curated Reel" on both the Evening Theater page (linked above) and Friday's Afternoon Theater schedule (here (http://www.siggraph.org/s2009/computer_animation_festival/screenings/evening.php)). If there was a mistake earlier, maybe they fixed it? Either way, congratulations on having work in the Festival! I can't wait to see it on the big screen.

Haha, that list of the reels wasn't there when I replied the other night. Just like I suspected unfortunately. Guess not a lot of peope complained last year on the surveys. Maybe it's all a ploy to make us buy the video review (which I always do anyway). I guess I'll miss most of the pieces this year and go out for a good lunch instead.

I bought the full weekly pass for the animation and the basic conference.

All screenings happen at the Convention Center, mainly the La Nouvelle Orleans Ballroom, but a few other rooms as well. More details here:

Not sure if you know this or not Josh, but my big Brit roommate Edi did all the editing, graphics, and comping for the Computer Animation Festival this year. I snuck some peeks. :) .....sweet stuff as usual.

I didn't know that, but that's awesome! I seriously can't wait to see the amazing work. This week is going to go by so slow waiting for SIGGRAPH to roll around. :argh:

First day was great, but I missed the first Real Time section due to an overlap of conference. Also that coldness of a conference makes me hungry, so I went to the Riverwalk to get some food.

Yeha, you practically need a blanket to stay warm in there. No wonder the SIGGRAPH passes are so expensive. They have to pay for all that AC!

I need to make the 3-5 showing. I learned the hard way that they just play the same selection at 6-9 each night.

Haha! I bet that was a drag finding that out late in the game. That's the beauty of being a student volunteer. They tell us these things in advance.
I will say that overall, the animation festival was pretty awesome! I have lots of ideas now.

Well to be fair the S2009 site did mention the RT section only played in the Evening Theatre.
My only big gripe was the elimination of the regular animation theatres, which would loop most accepted pieces throughout the day. Now you only have 1 chance to see most of the juried and curated pieces. SIGGRAPH is trying to hard to be a fancyachmanzy film festival to the detriment of the CAF. Don't forget to fill out your feedback forms.
And waht about such a small room for the stereoscopic content?
Overall the CAF was outstanding as always.
