View Full Version : texture resolution prob?
morgn 07-28-2003, 09:54 PM Im texturing a can of fly spray and everythings going fine, but being new to all this i have stumbled across what i would have thought to be a common problem.
The image below shows a test texture on the lid of the can and this looks fine (for now) close up:

but when i pull away i get a merging of the lines:

Why does this happen, and what is the solution?
thanks in advance,
Morgn.

Depends on what you use to render it with, but the basic solution is called texture filtering. Each renderer has its own settings for this. I use 3ds max, so I can only say what they use, but they have a bunch of filtering options, both at the render level and at the bitmap/material level.

This looks like a rendering problem to me... what are your anti-aliasing settings?

i use SoftImage and all render settings are set to default at the moment.
Aliasing settings are:
Sampling min level -1 : max 2
Jitter disabled
Threshold 0.2 for RGB and Alpha
Filtering type set to Box Size X and Y set at 1.
Being new to this i only have a mild idea as to what is going on (! )

Unfortunately I don't know SoftImage at all (couldn't EVER afford it, LOL), so I am not sure if those are high AA settings or not...
Perhaps check your manuals and look for recommended rendering settings, and try something higher?
Not really sure what else to suggest, sorry :)

Not a SI user either, but I would suggest experimenting with the Box filter, trying the other filters they list. And of course the manual.
Baaaah!

Could be a combination of both. Something similar to that happens in Maya if the filter for the texture is set to a particular type - Mip Map for example.
Actually, looking at it again, it looks more like an AA problem. If it was a filtering issue wouldn't it just look more blurry? In the picture the texture looks more fragmented so I guess it's more likely down to AA.

I don't have SI but options should be similar to Menral Ray for Maya. It seems both AA and filter problem. Try to set sampling level 1,2. Higer values probably will not work good for you. If you using bump map, it's better to leave filter width and height at minimum level (1 for box filter i think). Also lower the contrast (treshold?) values (say, ten times lower). Well, read docs to learn meanings of these settings and make experiments:buttrock:

You guys were right:
i upped the AA and the Threshold and things seemed to have worked out. I even tested it with animation and its ok- theres a little strobing effect but the merging of lines was sorted.
The problem could be to do with the Moire effect
NOUN: The effect of superimposing a repetitive design, such as a grid, on the same or a different design in order to produce a pattern distinct from its components
also:
Aliasing 'Jagged' images created by unfiltered angled lines being presented upon the raster lines. These effects include staircasing along diagonal lines, moire effects in checkerboards, and temporal aliasing (strobing) in animated scenes. Aliasing is caused by limited display resolution.
anyway, heres the test:
Moire Anim Test (http://www.snobo.co.uk/cantest.avi)
