View Full Version : Daily Portrait
Pancreas 07-28-2003, 08:44 PM There are at least two wrong words in that title....
You know great artists always say the secret for good drawing is practice, drawing everyday, blah blah blah. So I wanted to prove they are all wrong, and a month ago I started drawing a portrait every day. :D
Well, I haven´t painted one every day, you know, inspiration come and go, and they aren´t exactly original portraits as I use photo references on the net, mags, tv, drawing books... so I don´t have actually models posing for me.
Today´s

Yesterday´s

I´d love to hear your c&c, harsh critiques welcome, point out repeated flaws, suggestions, comments about colors, anatomy and techniques, whatever you want. I use painter classic and a wacom, max 2 hours.
I know Cgtalk rules about posting entire portfolios, so in the next link you can see 5 portraits selected by a friend (about 280kb)
5 more images (http://free.hostdepartment.com/P/Pancreas3D/r1.htm)

Both look great! I think the "hulk-green" guy looks better
but yeah, great

I really like the second image of the woman. Reminds me of a throwback to the 50's/60's housewife. Skin tones are great and the raised eyebrow really adds to the piece. Good work, keep 'em coming...

Looking good!
I prefer the green guy over the lady, since I think it has a better separation of light and dark. In the lady pic, the value of her skin is close to the value of the background making it more flat. But that might be just me.
I checked the link and I think those are all very good portraits. Especially love the old man with the hat. You have a nice style, good eye for colors too. Keep up the good work!
btw. You have not yet proved they're all wrong ;)
Ugh... I love the second picture!
I think that this green background expose her personality,
and add a great mood.. The hair is great too.
Nice works!

Kazuya Mochu he he yeah, didn´t realize the green was too hulk. I opened a new image with that background colour and didn´t changed.
mattregnier Glad you like her, yep, that was what I was aming for, a 60´ picture look.
Mikko K Portraits with hight contrast are easier to paint, even with only two colors the shapes and volumes are more distinguishable (sp?). The old man with the hat is one of my favorites too, unfortunately I lost the high resolution tga file.
Don´t worry, I´ll prove their theories are all wrong. ;)
vasa Hair is a great problem for me to paint, it always look as plastic or pasted on the head, that´s something I have to work more on, and got some good tutorials from the net.
I´m leaving to Paris this afternoon, so I hope to came back with lots of sexys bonneted madames portraits. Till then here are four more:

these are both very stunning. The first is great, very simple & confident, but I find the white a little too stark & distracting. Maybe blend a little blue or green in with it?
And the lady, so much intrigue. I love the longing I have to see or read what she's looking at. To be nit-picky, perhaps her chin is a little to long for the perspective? Great color combinations!
(and fantastic "retrato31.jpg" - my fav. A perfect balance of loosely suggested & tightly rendered. Love it)
I look forward to more of your work! :D

Back again, new and refreshed.
Zoetrope Yes, maybe the white is too bright, and black is too black, inconvenients of painting with no lights and only the monitor, colors change in the morning. And is very bad for your eyes too. Glad you like #31!
valeriu vasa These are quite quick portraits, and there isn´t a step by step process. I´ll do one in Open canvas so you can see my random messy work progress, but OC has not painter cool brushes.
A couple done in the train, is like drawing with a koala pushing your elbow all the time, very fun.

and influenced by Van de Velde and others art nouveau artists I saw in the Musée D´Orsay, overusing filters and textures in photoshop :hmm:
