Title: Astronauts
Name: Michael Kutsche
Country: Germany
Software: Painter
This is a commissioned piece I did for "Neo York", a collaborative art book project by New York based design studio Freestyle Collective http://www.freestylecollective.com/ and IdN http://idnworld.com/books/ , to be released in the next couple of months. Completely done in Corel Painter X. I truly believe that an artwork should speak for itself, it has to work even if the viewer doesn't read an instruction manual or the biography of the artist.
Curious about your interpretations of the image!

"...Long time ago humanity had to flee the old earth...since then their raged a war between several different unions, this had better be a friendly cause of action sending radiowaves that far, that we had to cope with our oldest history, otherwise me and my boys would be very disapointed.Dawn spreads and i can already feel my limbs numbing, with the winds of 250 mph + the range we could see would be less then one yard soon... we hadn't caught up with the signal yet..I am Commander Higgs and i don't like knowing nothing about a situation. All that's important are facts....and so far, we had none..."
Hey There, this is what i felt/saw/imagined according this great picture :)
I'd like to see more of this !

Nice work!
It looks like a different planet with astronauts heading back home or getting ready to fly. If the title was not "Astronauts" I would have thought it was a group of people walking out of the city.

Great painting!
The less than glamorous astronauts and the color-coded plastic bags that is crammed into this frame. Some are even tied on to it… Made me think this might be about consumerism, of course I may be totally wrong (:

Absolutely beautiful image, Love the overall texture and mood. As you said it tells a story by itself, it makes us hold on to the image and not let go until we knew what is going on in there, whatever it is. Congrats!

An awesome drawing, wooow woooooow, I like your drawing sooo much, can you show me ( and for sure show all members and visitors ) the making of this drawing ?
one more question, do you have an Art study to be able to do this kind of beautiful CG painting ??

hmmm...the way I interpret is that the "astronauts" are cleaning up a bit, gathering the waste on the earth, and heading for the moon. I initially thought the red white and blue had some significance but..meh...awesome work man!

Im going to say that its a few existentialists roaming around, with that obscure perspective of the world, exploring like 'astronauts'.
Keep them coming.

What these guys have to do with astronauts ??
Nothing to look like astronauts, perhaps guys from east european army forced to lift bags of garbage or clothes
Astronauts make people dream, these guys not
"I truly believe that an artwork should speak for itself, it has to work even if the viewer doesn't read an instruction manual or the biography of the artist."
I don't know because here, an explanation is really needed ;))
However, amazing technique !!

Personally, I don't think any explanation is needed at all. People can probably come up with a lot of appropriate interpretations. To me, looking at this image, I immediately interpret it as guys who are doing a boring job, who are daydreaming that they are astronauts so that they do not feel bored.

Michael the detail in your images always blows me away. This one is no different. Well done, a very inspiring piece. Regarding the discussion of whether they look like astronauts/the need for an explanation, etc, I agree with Leigh. No need for one, it should be up to the viewer. To me these guys could be astronauts who have landed on a cold, barren earth-like planet. Maybe they are currently making their way to their base. Anyway you look at it, it's a brilliant image.
ratus69
08-19-2009, 08:30 AM
Well in fact the point here is the lack of consistency between the idea behind the drawing and the drawing...
I'm astonished to see really good drawing technique used in a way that means nothing really interesting.
What is the aim of such a painting ? What the painter wanted to tell us ? Why having named this piece of art "astronanauts" ?
The explanations given by Leigh
"I immediately interpret it as guys who are doing a boring job, who are daydreaming that they are astronauts so that they do not feel bored."
Doesn't convince me : they look old and one is smoking...are you sure they are dreaming to be astronauts ? they do not feel bored ? hard to tell....
And Madbot told us :
"To me these guys could be astronauts who have landed on a cold, barren earth-like planet. Maybe they are currently making their way to their base."
Have you ever seen an astronaut smoked ? earth-like planet ? it would take ages to find one and if one day we will find it, I'm afraid clothes won't look like old clothes from Russian or Chinese army
And here we can see that all "serious" explanations given won't stand because of the lack of consistency of this paint : plastic bags, cigarette, boring guys...does-it really make you "instantly" think of astronaut's world ????
Sorry not me
But if it's just for fun, it's ok ;)

Its quite disappointing that most of the CGsociety members dont really seem to 'get' this image. Its quite clear, (unless I'm completely mistaken,)
This is post-apocalyptic America (hence the red white and blue) These are the astronauts that are left. The American space race was massive political and patriotic effort. So this image is saying "ooh look at America now; theyre all homeless hobos with carrier bags instead of space suits."
If the title doesnt add up then the background could have been painted at a destroyed Kennedy Space centre? With an old space helmet cracked, on the ground? The image could then concievably be left 'untitled'
Its ok to have it called 'Astronauts' but without that exact title the image looses its meaning.
