View Full Version : Maya Materials and Lighting help!
I am a modeler who needs some Maya materials and lighting advice. I finished modeling an asset for a client but am in need of some insight to add the right materials and lights to my object. I need my finished product to look like the object in the weblink below. Help!
Thanks a bunch.

mr or Maya software renderer? And you'll probably get more specific help in the Maya Rendering thread.
Preferably MR but if I can get good results with the scanline then that would be fine too. The main problem I'm having now is getting that reflection to look nice and bright while keeping the background almost pitch black on the front of the asset.
I need to reproduce that smooth looking reflection.

Have a black environment, use a big area light and set it's shape to visible. Or slightly faster and gives the same result, a point light and then setup self-illuminating white planes around the model, but out of the camera view (or make them one-side, whichever). This gives something for the material to reflect.
For the material, use mia_material_x, set a high reflectivity, high gloss and very low diffuse weight. This is a good starting point for the reflective front.
Thanks a bunch Cbamber85. This is definitely pushing me in the right direction. I noticed that you were looking for jobs in England. My art director developed the website below which tries to compile and list all the game companies in each locale.
Click on your location and go from there. Good luck.

Cheers man, appreciated. I applied for a couple, to add to the very large amount I've already applied to...
I have US citizenship, so I'd love to work out there for a bit, but the girlfriend may be mad. :)
Hey if you go anywhere San Francisco is the place. It's a very international town and there's something for everyone.
