Do you mean turn off the emitter? Or make the particles invisible?

The emitter will stop emitting particles when you turn the Rate to 0 (in the attributes under "Basic emitter Attributes".

If you want an already existing particle to die off, you'll have to set it's Lifespan from "live forever" to "constant", "random range" or use "lifespanPP". You can find the option in the attributes of the "particleShape"

Alternatively you could lower the opacity/radius of the particle to make it fade out instead of dissapear.
