View Full Version : Rigging a cube...
bala2007 07-08-2009, 12:19 PM Hi,
Have been fighting this problem on my own for a while. How do you rig a cube to have different pivot point so you can animate it lift from all it sides.

parent it to itself however many times you want, change the pivots for each node. Create controllers for it which parent constrain to the corresponding nodes. animate!

WOw! Thankx a bunch. never never taught of it.

There's a problem with the technique. When i parent constraint controllers to the parent node, one of the parent node gets disconnected.
Not exactly what you're after but the theory might help you.

No they cant. Constraints dont change the hierachy. You are not supposed to parent the controllers, but but CONSTRAIN them. There is a difference.

@Remi
Thanks for the link. Similar to what am trying to achieve.
@mindsample
I did a parent constraint not a direct parent. But i found the problem and fixed it.
@all
i attached the file. i only did for the bottom corners only. You can help me improve on it so i can learn from the file.

glad you fixed the problem. Applying a constraint can never change the node hierachy.

Well, I think changing pivot of an object is a tricky part. Making group nodes which are parented on top with different pivot points does the trick but the world/local space and object space challenges are really obvious.
There is another way to go through this...
1. Create a controller which will work as the pivot controller.
2. Connect the Translate of the controller to the rotate pivot of the object through connection editor...
Now the controller works as a animatable pivot for the object.

Thanks for the link.
@Boucha
That sounds like a technique that might work.

Also try the makeRoll mel command. Learned about it last week, it creates a fricking cool expression for both cubes and spheres.
