View Full Version : Animation: Abtract Shapes
gametech 07-28-2003, 04:06 PM Hi everyone
I created this animation for a research project I'm working on.
The project is about the different moods that can be created by the use of light and color.
Here is the result:
lowres
Geopaint Movie.mov ( 320x240, 6 MB) (http://www.larssteenhoff.com/cg/cgtalk/geopaint320_6mb.mov)
highres
Geopaint Moviehighrez.mov ( 720x576, 50 MB) (http://www.larssteenhoff.com/cg/cgtalk/geopaint720_50mb.mov)
Here is a gallery of still shots

If there was an opinion would that be one you would expect?
Do you think it's too boring?
Being on a 'high art' educational institute, would you have issues if people in the popular arts would feel that way or would it strengthen the idea that high art is allowed to be boring?
Do we see where the plane ends? Do we 'get' it?
And is less really more?

It think it was scary :argh: , it reminds me of The ring "if you watch this tape you die after 7 days " , but it was pretty nice !

I love the Metroid music, it bugged me at first because I recognized it, but couldn't remember where I knew it from. I also like how the camera returns to its exact same position and the lights also return to their exact same color.

It's nice to watch. It would be nicer if there is a growing or shrinking of this pikes etc.
Btw. if you want to find out something about mood and light you shouldn't insert such a soundtrack. It fits well but it falsify the result because the music itself produces a different mood.

Yes your right about the music KendoJedi,It's from metroid 4 I'm a huge metroid fan.
Yes the movie is made to run in a loop.
thanks for your comment

cool never thought it would give such a impression, nice to hear you opinion Ac0rN.

Oktavian your right, I was thinking about animation the spikes, in fact I have made some animated sequences already, but that will be the next movie. This one is without animation of the object so I could just focus on the light, but the next step is defenitly moving objects. When I have some free time I'll make a more animated version , I'm also thinking about an interactive version. With realtime 3d graphics. But I must be sure that I like the looks of realtime before I'll make that.
If there was an opinion would that be one you would expect?
Any opinion is interesting, I'm open for critics. But your right it is not the first thing to expect, but if thats what people think I'm interested in knowing.
Being on a 'high art' educational institute, would you have issues if people in the popular arts would feel that way or would it strengthen the idea that high art is allowed to be boring? For me it's not really an issue of High art, it's about mood the and atmosphere I wanted to create. but I'm not really sure what you mean, do you think High Art is allowed to be boring ?, doesnt High Art mean that it is popular by many people(including art critics) and therefore not boring to them.

Pjanssen, I just finished my education at the HKU, did Interaction Design, but I'm not sure if I would recommend it, Most of what you learn is from fellow classmates en selfstudy, not the teachers, well at least that was my experience. not entierly sure yet if that is a bad or good thing.
I you like animation I would recomment that at the HKU , here you have a lot of time to make some nice animations and you can learn Maya and/or Max and traditional animation aswell. ( clay/ dolls/drawing/ etc)

I had high hopes for your animation, because the concept seemed nice and a bit different compared to most of the stuff we see here. I enjoyed the camera movement and the shapes... all in all it was interesting and well excecuted, although towards the end I started to get a little bored, since there wasn't really much happening in the scene. I do have a short attention span though.
So, no major crits. Looking forward to seeing more of your work in the future.
All the best, Tuomas.
