View Full Version : SMC 12: Kart Racer
07-08-2009, 03:38 AM
Objective: Create a cartoony racing kart like you would see in popular games like mario kart and other video games. You can make it realistic or you can make it cartoony. The objective is to challenge yourself, more than showcase your abilities so try and push yourself.
You have 120 minutes of modeling time that you need to work within. Please post wireframe, program default shaded screen capture (not a render, however shader transparency and color may be changed). It is optional and does not count toward your time limit to provide a beauty render, however your focus should be on the model than it is an attractive render.
Please feel free to share advice and ask for help. Comments and Critiques are an important tool in bettering yourself, so use them!

This should be fun!
Here are some images for inspiration and reference:

thanks for the references!
I also forgot to mention that if you wanted to go pretty simple with it and include a character you can as well. It's not limited to the kart itself.

Here's my model. Made it in 120 minutes. Hope you like it. Any crits and comments will be nice to hear!

I think the steering wheel is just a little too small, even for cartoony kind of stuff.. it just seems a little too hidden. I like the design and all though, and the big exhaust pipe jetting out of the back.

This is my first post here and first crack at one of these speed modeling challenges. Been using Maya for about 4 weeks now. The kart came out better than I expected it would, took me 116minutes to model though was pushing it the last 20minutes or so to get as much as I could done hah. More I could do obviously but still trying to figure out how to do a lot of things. Was a great learning experience.

Nice work you guys. I think I'll try one later this week.

Here is mine. I'm new to Maya, this is my 1st post. I ran out of time and didn't get to build the gas/brake pedals. Spent too much time on the wheels.

Lookin' good, everyone.
IRAFK, welcome to the SMC. You did pretty well for being new to Maya.
I don't know if I'll be able to get mine up by the end of the week. I have around 16 character models to make for my job  I might be able to pull something off on Thursday.

nice work guys, and IRAFK that is awesome. Welcome to the boards and challenges.
I've had 1 day off this week, which was spent with family, so that is why I don't have an entry, but thursday I might do one if I have a chance, even though I'm supposed to visit my brother, but I just have not been home lately, kinda sucks. But it is great to come in when I have a chance and see some people participating. Keep it up guys!

1st time doing this.
Pardon me for my lousy modeling skills.

no need to put your skills down. the point of this whole deal is to help you get better and work on things you need to work on while getting help from others. You've got a really good start and good base to work with and I think once you learn some more techniques and shortcuts and everything you'll really be able to get some stuff done. I know when I first started with maya I couldn't do anything like that.
that being said, here is my entry. took an hour and a half and I had to wrap it up because I need to go to a friends baseball game. wish I could have done more with it.
I used to race WKA Dirt Oval kart racing and instead of going cartoony with it, I decided to model a racing kart style. here it is:

finally a challenge that's easy enough for me to do. Here's mine done with lightwave
I thought I'd have a kart with a jet turbine in the back, fasten your seat belts ^^

Nice work everyone! We got some really good models in this SMC. Also, it was great to see more entries this time.
Can we start a 'preparing to SMC13' thread? We can start another challenge at the start of the week and we will still have one day and some hours for anyone that wants to post on this one.
