does anybody know how to make an object only render the shadows being casted on it?

sorry for the elementary question... and i'm using 2009

apply a Use Background Shader to it.

i was going through the forums to see if anyone had the same question.
I have tried using the Background Shader in Maya, but it is not as good as the Matte Shader in Max.
for instance if I want to render a plane that is receiving shadows from a cylinder, but not see the cylinder and still have the alpha channel reflect the cylinder's presence it does not do that. The alpha is completely white. Whereas with matte shader in max, you can disable visibility of the cylinder, but still get black for the cylinder in the alpha channel.

I was hoping Autodesk would bring the matte shader to maya from max, since it owns both of them.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

turn off Primary Visibility in the cylinders shape node. It will still cast shadows but not be seen in the rendering
