Hey everyone,

Its been a while since my last post. I have a quick question for all of you advanced riggers. I have been working on project now for over a year. We have a character that I rigged using the Advanced Rigging Script v 2.0. We now have numerous revisions of the model. The rig has not changed!

The question I have. Is there a way to transfer animations from an older version of our character rig to a newer version with minimal trouble.

I have read through the tutorial that came with the script. However, I did not see any mention of how to go about this. Is there a way to do this within the Scripts utilities?

Or is there another script that will also provide this functionality.

Thanks in advanced.

So, the rig is exactly the same? If so, the easiest thing would probably be to copy keyframes from the old to the new or save out animation and load it onto the new.

To save out an animation file, make sure you have the anim importer/exporter loaded by going to your plug in manager, and checking animImportExport.mll.

After that, select the main control of your old rig and go to File>Export Selection>Options and check animExport from the file type drop down. Go down to the specific options and check "Below" for Hierarchy. This will make sure it exports everything under your main controller/node. Pick a time range if you want, and export. You can then load this animation file onto your new rig by selecting the new rig's main controller and going to File>Import>Options and picking animImport from the file type.

You could also copy keyframes by referencing your old rig's file with animation into your new rig's scene, selecting the old rig's main control and going to Edit>Keys>Copy Keys and selecting similar options to what was desribed above.... "Below" for the hierarchy and whatever frame range you want to copy. Then select the main control on your new rig and go to Edit>Keys>Paste Keys.

If you don't have a main controller/node that will allow this, you can select all the controls and do the same thing, except select "Selected" under the hierarchy options instead of "below".

If you have a different hierarchy setup between the rigs, I've had good luck using the transfer animation part of the zooToolBox. It will allow you to re-target animations from one control to another fairly easily. You can download the zooToolBox at http://www.macaronikazoo.com/download/zooToolBox.7z (http://www.macaronikazoo.com/download/zooToolBox.7z)
