View Full Version : WIP Environment: Asylum
Gideon 07-07-2009, 01:14 PM This is a project I've been working on off and on for quite awhile. All of the assets are designed for Unreal Engine 3, but these shots are from a render from a max animation for portfolio purposes. I'd like to get some critiques on what works, what doesn't brightness/contrast issues etc.
This place has been abandoned for awhile, but still remotely in working order. It's also haunted.

That looks great, awesome work!
Crits:
- The autopsy table is a little thin and normally has a sink, instruments and a drainage/pump system at the head. But it really depends on era of table.
- The specular on a lot of the objects is kind of flat.
- Not sure if this place is still in use, its like it just closed? Pretty creepy.
The atmosphere is great!

Mark hit a lot of the high points. I definitely think the textures could show a bit more spec (on surfaces that make sense of course). In all 3 floor shots, I think some more spec on the floor would really help out a lot. But yeah I absolutely love the atmosphere and mood you are going for.
The bathroom seems a fair bit large for a bathroom in that environment. I would think it would be a bit more claustrophobic and cramped. Feels almost as big as the morgue in the first shot. Ceiling also feels a bit high, but that's just my personal opinion.
Im looking forward to seeing updates on this one. Looking great so far man.

The atmosphere looks pretty good!
I think that all 3 areas suffer from the same thing though: there is way too much open space. I think the floors look way too clean for a place that has been abandoned. I would add more small props, such as autopsy tools lying on the ground, mounds of dust, pieces of paper and garbage, something so the floor doesn't look like it was sweeped this morning.
All of your textures are pretty flat: Are you using bump/normal and spec maps? If so I can't really tell.
In the bathroom, you have tiles missing from the walls, like they fell out. Where did they go? One would expect to see them laying on the floor near where they fell.
The table in the autopsy room (not the autopsy table but the one in the foreground) looks way too flimsy. The legs are really skinny, and they don't look like they belong on that table.
In the second image, it looks like the area near the autopsy room is foggy. Is this meant to be light rays from the window? If so, then open up the windows, they currently have curtains over them, and no light would actually get in.
Overall, the lights in the scene seem inaccurate with how it is actually lit. For example, the hanging lights in the second image, while they are glowing, don't appear to be the main source of light, although it appears they would be realistically.
Also, in the bathroom image, the shadow being cast off of the stalls from the ceiling lights looks off. Are your lights lower than the actual light sources? By following the shadow it appears they are several feet below the light source.
==========================
If this place is abandoned (and especially haunted) I think you can do a little bit more to convey this. For example, if you are in a morgue area, a trail of blood going from the hallway, through the morgue area, and behind the blinds would be cool. I also think that your scene is 2 evenly lit. If the scene is significantly darker, and the lights are more dynamic, you can create more mood/tension. This combined with the better specular/normal(or bump) maps would make a big improvement on the scene, and further convey the backstory.
==========================
I think that fixing some of these things will greatly add to the scene, and make it a much stronger piece. Good luck! And I hope to see some more progress!!

Digging all of this. Maybe you should change up the spec or brighten up the cloth panels in your "Morgue" shot. I think it'd break up the scenery a bit more. Kind of like how your sink lights in the bathroom shot break it up a bit in there. Something different than the normal tones.
Not sure how you'd pull it off, but if you could change the dust on the glass in the bathroom, seeing a smeered hand print or something would add to the spookiness. Like dust that's been cleared aside I mean.
Things are looking great.
