View Full Version : need help with my first matte painting :(
InnerUniverse 07-07-2009, 04:48 AM Well this is my very first shot at matte painting. It's not done yet as I have one big problem which distracts me from finishing it.
Its layering. You can see the difference between the sky and a mountain, buildings in the hill on the left and so on. I really tried to fit everything tone and color vise but it jst doesnt look good..
Pls help me because am really stuck with it :/
Also i'm interested in how to make good dense background grass?
Is it a brush, or jst cloning a grassy field layer?
(sorta something you can see on Andree Wallins, and Dylan Cole works)
I've searched the net but I couldnt find what i was looking for.
this is the WIP

Hey, I'm not usually into photo manipulation, but I have to say this is looking really good. I think what is throwing it off for you is the inconsistent lighting. The tower cliff like part upper left looks pasted just focus on fixing the shadows and i think it will turn out how you want it to.
*edit* Also try softening the edges a bit this may take away the paste feel.

till now good work but dont know, anyting with the perspective is wrong (for me)
as well for a first matte painting.... lets say that...
for start matte painting id concider start with a sketch a scribble work out the colour palette and then start bringing in photos, cuz u want to make the photos working for your project, not that you have to work for the photos (that they match with each other)
super natural envoirments are really cool, as cool as destructed citys, incredible hyper sci fi envoirs. by dylan cole for example.
but with starting matte painting id start with simple set/photo extensions, its boring yes, it does not look as cool as a sci fi szene, but to reach professionall lvl u need a lot of pacience and discipline.
and to reach a lvl compared to dc stoski or somebody else u might need 10yrs ++++ so how i said i would not start with supernaturals i did same and it took me so long to recognize it, always the perspective was off and something did not fit, so i started again with extensions and stuff..
a hard way to go and an art which is just learning by doing (and looking ofc xD)

This is an impressive first start, it's very appealing, and well constructed - it doesn't scream "Matte!" like some do.
I think your colors are the key here. The blue of the sky is too different from the blues you've used in the distance - get them closer to each other, and I think it'll tie together much better. Remember, what's really happening is that distant objects are reflecting the color of the sky back at you, so the two have to match.
It's the key to realistic painting anyway, it's all about color. Painting traditional landscapes is all about getting the colors right, because you give visual cues for distance with them.
I remember when, in college, I saw a special show at a museum in LA that included some of the actual mattes on glass for the first Star Wars, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. They were surprisingly loose in how they were painted, but the colors were fascinating in how subtle they were, and how they were what created the illusion. I think you have the eye for it, you just need to tweak some of yours.
looks amazing to me. However i found the sky too bright and you're definitely missing shadows.. thats why it looks kinda 2D.
I must say for a first time matte painting, this is really looking excellent. I agree with the issue of shadows that Zeel pointed out. I would like to see some more variation of foliage near the foreground of the image, but that's just me :)
But really, everything said and done, this is most excellent for a first matte painting.
