Hello, i've been working on a project for some time, and today when working my max files became corrupt. I'm on win2k, though i haven't installed the dreaded 4th service pack, i'm not sure what it can be, i just get a 'File open failed' message.

Is there anyway to get the work back? It's about two weeks worth of work since my last cd save.

Of course, there is a shiny new donkey for anyone who can help.

I've also included this image to make the thread appear more interesting than it actually is.

hi mrfandiwagon,

Check if you've got enough space on your system disk. 3dsmax uses the temp-dir of windows and will generate a "File open failed" error if there isn't enough free space..

Hey magicm,

I have around 50GB on my hd...is that what you mean?

Odd. The autobackup that was created just before max crashed isn't in the autoback folder, yet it's in the quick menu. Is that supposed to be happen?

Ahh! i got it :) I found an autoback file that i accidently (!) saved today, hidden away somewhere, renamed it to a .max file, and it's working :)

Thanks magicm too, you get a shiny donkey in either case :)

sorry to cause a fuss....

I too had the exact same problem. Thank's to the thinking and insight of a fellow 3DS Max user at alt.binaries.3dstudio I found the cure to the problem. Something in Max is corrupting the files. To fix this, open Max and Reset a New Scene. Select File-->Merge and then browse to your corrupted file. Select all of the objects in the new dialog and it will open the file. Just resave the new file and there ya go. I saved 2 projects that I was working on and thought I had lost. Hope that helps.

Well it didnīt help me!! :banghead:

When I try to merge I get a "File failed to open" message.

Thatīs just GREAT! I would expect more of Discreet to come up with some sort of recovery function if they canīt fix the bugs.

This is really getting on my nerves :banghead:

Same thing happened to me in Viz..

Come to find out that it was a windows service pack that installed / updated itself that was incompatable with VIZ and MAX. It was SP 823980. We took it off and it worked. I was even able to open corrupt .max files.

Thats my .02

I think that makes $ .o4 cents!!

Max has been corrupting files on me for years now. Once you realise that it sucks you will be much happier and better prepared. Soon you too will become a habitual CTRL - S person after any and all actions.

It sux that you have to be that paranoid, but since Discreet doesn't give a sh** about users you have to take matters into your own hands.

oh man... My problem seems to be more severe... Every file I save, ends up to be corrupt... Wazzup with that?

I'm also having a problem with files that I can't open, every time I try to open a file, I get this error : "An error has occurred and the application will now close. No scene changes have occurred since your last save."
Luckily after a few times retrying to open the file it finally opens, but it's irritating after a while.:annoyed:
But maybe it could be my HD-space as I read in this thread, cause I have always 600 MB or something like that free on my Max/Windows-HD. I'll give that a try later.
Also I had corrupted files in the beginning, but now I have an up-to-date Max and I learned to save regulary. But still, such things are f*cking annoying, even if you haven't lost the models itself.:annoyed:
