View Full Version : My current work, need some suggestions
swallow-xu 07-06-2009, 01:19 PM Hello, everyone. I've been studying 3d game character design for about one year. Recently, I finished a work for pratice. It's a low-polygon model with about 1.6k faces. I want to get some suggestions here to improve my skills of modeling and texturing. thanks very much.

Nothing to critique really, just maybe a little bit to much polygons on the breasts ?

This a cool looking model. From it I tell you have a good sense of texturing. I like the design of it. The color choices are good. Are you studying on your own or are you going to school?
Now, I'm going to compare it to what I'm familiar with. From
what I see this is a model that would be used on a ps2 maybe psp game. It
is model in a way that the face can't be really animated everything is painted in. It's well done unfortunately it won't hold up when you compare it to a character for a 360 game. At 1600k polys you got alot out of it. One thing that I notices is that there's no seams on the clothing. You can probably add that small detail. The only Other thing I would suggest is the ear they're not there they're painted on but when you see the front they're missing and it makes the head head look really odd.
On a side note. I think your texturing is pretty good, you seem to have hand
painted all of it. Which is a good thing to have, unfortunately it
makes your work look very stylize. If I may humbly suggest that in your final portfolio include texturing that was done using photos it'll show that you have range. I would also personally add some next gen stuff characters with a higher poly count, normal maps, spec, cosine, in
my experience for next gen characters range from 4k (quads) and up. Over all pretty good.
Just my opinions and I'm still learning also so I could totally be wrong.

Thank you very much for these such helpful suggestions. like the ears, I almost ignored such an obvious mistake. I've been studying painting for four years and learning modeling and texturing by myself since one years ago. your suggestion about stylize is very right, I'll try to improve it in this way.
Your suggestions are very HELPFUL to me, thank you.
